With the release of the Dead Space remake earlier this year, the franchise has made a remarkable comeback and solidified its position as one of the top survival horror series in the gaming industry. These games were already renowned for their immersive atmosphere and intense gameplay, and the Dead Space remake has only enhanced these qualities with modern gaming technology. As a result, fans are eagerly anticipating the remakes of the other titles in the series, as well as a potential Dead Space 4.
Although a fourth installment in the Dead Space series would certainly be well-received, it may be beneficial to shake things up and explore different protagonists instead of solely focusing on Isaac Clarke. Looking at the success of the Resident Evil franchise, which has effectively incorporated multiple characters, can serve as a valuable blueprint for expanding the Dead Space universe.
Resident Evil's Multiple Characters and Branching Storylines
Since its inception in the original Resident Evil game released in 1996, the franchise has expanded extensively with a multitude of sequels, live action films, and even comic books. In the world of video games, particular attention has been given to the continuous development of the core set of characters in nearly every mainline installment. Leon Kennedy was introduced in Resident Evil 2, Jill Valentine took the spotlight in Resident Evil 3, while the more recent entries, Resident Evil 7 and Village, showcased the everyday protagonist, Ethan Winters.
This is crucial as it enhances the depth of the world and adds a grander sense of scale to the events taking place. Despite the first three games taking place in close proximity to each other, they each revolve around different protagonists and storylines. In a global pandemic outbreak teeming with monsters and other ghoulish creatures, it would be strange if players only experienced the journey of one character. Being able to witness the devastation of Raccoon City, along with the more intimate events in Resident Evil 7, truly brings the world to life.
Exploring New Characters in Dead Space
In terms of setting, Resident Evil is confined to a single planet, while Dead Space expands its scope to the vast expanse of outer space. This allows for endless exploration of new planets and solar systems, as demonstrated by the franchise's venture to the icy planet Tau Volantis in Dead Space 3. This drastic change of pace from the previous two installments, with their dark and gloomy hallways, further highlights the infinite possibilities that await in the Dead Space universe.
Until now, the series has solely focused on Isaac Clarke and his battles against the Necromorph threat. However, it is time to shift our attention towards new protagonists in future games, while still allowing Isaac to make occasional appearances. By expanding the cast of characters, we can explore new story possibilities and delve deeper into the vast universe that the Necromorph species has existed in for so long. One potential direction is to venture back into the franchise's history and create a prequel game that uncovers the discovery of the Necromorphs. This would allow us to explore a time when technology was less advanced, putting the characters at a greater risk while fighting off the aliens. Another option could be to emulate Resident Evil and have a game that takes place simultaneously with a previous installment. During Isaac's struggle for survival aboard the Ishimura, there could have been another survivor somewhere within the massive space vessel, desperately attempting to escape as well. The possibilities for the future of Dead Space are limitless, considering the vastness of space itself.
