The Dead Space universe is expanding with the announcement of an official scripted podcast. Called Dead Space: Deep Cover, this upcoming podcast will follow the journey of a journalist searching for her missing sister, who supposedly joined the Church of Unitology. After being inactive for more than ten years, EA has chosen to revive its highly praised survival-horror franchise with a complete remake of the original 2008 game. The reception for the remake has been overwhelmingly positive, and the introduction of the podcast demonstrates EA's ongoing commitment to the series.
According to the official description of the podcast, Dead Space: Deep Cover will chronicle the journey of journalist Emmeline Ayuba as she embarks on a quest to locate her sister, who is believed to have joined a local Unitologist church. In her pursuit to reunite with her sibling, Emmeline will confront inner conflicts, unfamiliar rituals, and make personal sacrifices as she unravels the enigmatic beliefs of this religious group. For those unfamiliar with Unitology, it is a fictional religion in the Dead Space universe that posits the idea of human creation through intelligent extraterrestrial intervention, with the promise of being "reunified" after death through the power of the Markers, ultimately transforming into a Necromorph.
The upcoming scripted podcast, Dead Space: Deep Cover, will be penned by renowned sci-fi writer Ben Counter, known for his extensive contributions to the Warhammer 40,000 franchise. Counter has written for various series within the franchise, including Space Marine Legends, Battles, Grey Knights, and Soul Drinkers. Produced by Bloody Disgusting in collaboration with EA and part of the Cineverse Podcast Network, Dead Space: Deep Cover is set to release in Q1 2024 on all major podcast platforms, with a total of 12 episodes scheduled to be released weekly.
Interestingly, this news comes in the wake of another similar project, The Callisto Protocol. Serving as a prequel to the game, The Callisto Protocol: Helix Station features notable talents such as Gwendoline Christie and Michael Ironside. Moreover, it even includes a playful reference to Dead Space's iconic Plasma Cutter weapon. It is intriguing to observe the potential exchange of ideas between these two franchises, especially considering that The Callisto Protocol was directed by the original co-creator of Dead Space.
The Dead Space: Deep Cover podcast is expected to enhance the franchise's lore and attract new players. Although the game is typically priced at $70, there is currently a significant discount on the Dead Space remake, making it an opportune time for players to experience the thrill of exploring the USG Ishimura. Dead Space can be enjoyed on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
