Blizzard recently announced their efforts to eliminate the renowned "Shred Druid build" from Diablo 4 in order to restore game balance. This particular build, highly regarded by players, allowed for an unbelievable amount of damage to be inflicted. However, it appears that its reign will soon come to an end.
A few days ago, a streamer named Moxsy shared a clip featuring his Diablo 4 druid unleashing a staggering 1.8 billion damage in a single strike. This remarkable achievement was made possible by a unique build focused on consistently landing critical hits with area-of-effect lightning damage. Moxsy referred to this build as "Lightning Shred 2.0" and detailed its strategy, which involved utilizing a Waxing Gibbous axe to ensure Shred critical hits, minimizing Shred Spirit cost, amplifying critical strike damage with abilities like the Aspect of the Rampaging Werebeasts, and maximizing the damage output of critical hits. When combined with customized gear, these factors culminated in an awe-inspiring, albeit imbalanced, build.
However, the creators of Diablo 4 have indicated that the days of the famous shred druid may be limited. In a recent statement to PC Gamer, Blizzard confirmed that this particular build is not intentional and their developers are currently exploring ways to address it in the upcoming update.
While this build does not appear to be a bug in Diablo 4, it is an unintended exploit of the game mechanics that significantly impacts gameplay balance. Other builds are unable to match the damage output of this particular build. Blizzard acknowledges this issue and is considering removing certain triggers that facilitate this exploit in order to prevent abuse. It is not yet clear how the build will be rectified.
Blizzard has more than just nerfs to overpowered druid builds planned for the future. Diablo 4 is currently getting ready for its first season, known as the Season of the Malignant, which is set to launch on July 20. A recent livestream hinted at a possible date for Season 2, with an image suggesting it could begin in October 2023. Blizzard had previously announced that each season of the action RPG would span approximately three months, making this October date a likely starting point.
