Overwatch 2's returning events have had mixed outcomes. The new Battle for Olympus event has introduced exciting brawls, while the Lunar New Year and Winter Wonderland events have been repetitive for returning players. However, the Summer Games event stands out as it will not only feature the usual Lucio Ball mode but also a new limited time mode centered around Winston. Although details about this mode are scarce, it is Blizzard's interpretation of volleyball, fitting the Summer Games theme. Players are expected to play as Primal Rage Winston, juggling balls and attempting to score on the opposing team's side of the net. This adaptation of another sport demonstrates the untapped potential of the Summer Games event.
Other Sports That Can Become Summer Games Modes in Overwatch 2
Blizzard should continue adding new brawls with each Summer Games event, considering the diverse roster and the characters' interests in various sports in Overwatch 2. The lengthy wait between Lucio Ball and Winston Volleyball was unsatisfactory, so it is preferable to have more limited time modes introduced annually. Since Summer Games is a parody of the Olympics and offers numerous sports options to adapt, there is great potential for additional content.
An excellent choice for a new brawl would be Pharah Basketball. Pharah, the rocket queen, has demonstrated her love for the sport through dialogues and a special highlight intro. Given this knowledge, it is logical to include her favored sport in the game, as envisioning Overwatch 2's interpretation of Basketball is relatively straightforward. Instead of Pharah's launcher firing rockets in a straight path, they could be designed to drop quickly, enabling players to take long-distance shots reminiscent of three-pointers. To make the gameplay more reminiscent of real Basketball, only one Pharah player would possess a functioning rocket launcher, while the opposing team would have to engage in melee combat to "steal" possession.
Football is a fun sport to consider, and Reinhardt's Gridironhardt skin reveals his love for this American pastime. In Overwatch 2, an exciting approach to this sport could involve two Reinhardts stunning each other whenever they collide. This would add an element of "blocking," with a non-Reinhardt running back like Soldier: 76 needing to sprint to the endzone while avoiding charging Reinhardts. They could also be defended by friendly Reinhardts who can pin opponents and knock them down.
Other athletic heroes in Overwatch 2, such as Zarya and Tracer, should also be taken into account. For Zarya and her weightlifting abilities, players could compete in button mashing bouts or a rhythm game similar to Final Fantasy 7 Remake's squats. For Tracer, a sprinting course could involve multiple players racing to reach the finish line before their opponents. This would require making difficult jumps and carefully timing their blinks to win the intense contest.
Blizzard has the opportunity to incorporate a wide range of sports, such as sprinting, weightlifting, basketball, and football, for future Summer Games activities. The inclusion of Winston Volleyball is particularly thrilling, and there is immense potential for Blizzard to continue adding sports-themed brawls to its hero shooter. Rather than treating it as a one-time event, Blizzard should make annual additions the standard, leading up to a grand Overwatch 2 Olympics in the future. Overwatch 2 can currently be enjoyed on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
