Sand Land may not be as well-known as some of Akira Toriyama's other works, but it's still receiving a video game adaptation announced at this year's Summer Game Fest. Toriyama is famous for his unique art style and characters, having created iconic series such as Dr. Slump and the massively popular Dragon Ball franchise, which has already spawned numerous video games. Dragon Ball: The Breakers has recently unveiled new characters for its third season as well.
Toriyama's impressive career began with Wonder Land, a one-shot that debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1978 and received a sequel, Wonder Land 2, the following year. His subsequent work, Dr. Slump, ran for four years between 1980 and 1984, spanning 236 chapters and becoming a sensation, selling over 35 million copies in Japan alone by 2008. Toriyama then went on to create Dragon Ball, one of the best-selling manga of all time and a series that helped popularize anime in the West through its TV adaptation.
The 2023 Summer Game Fest has announced a new action-adventure game based on the Sand Land manga created by the Dragon Ball creator. The game will follow the story of the Fiend Prince Beelzebub and his companions as they search for the Legendary Spring, the source of all water in the world, which is controlled by a greedy king. Alongside the game, Sunrise Studio is also adapting Sand Land into a movie set to be released in August 2023. Developed by ILCA, the game promises to feature a vast world, interesting characters, and "explosive" vehicular combat. ILCA has previously worked on titles such as Pokemon Brilliant Diamond, Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age, and Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown. The Sand Land project was first teased in December 2022, on the same day as The Game Awards.
Fans of Akira Toriyama will immediately recognize his signature art style in Sand Land, which translates beautifully into video games. Although he may not be as widely recognized for his work in the gaming industry, Toriyama has contributed to several acclaimed titles such as Dragon Quest, Blue Dragon, and Chrono Trigger - a game that is widely regarded as one of the best RPGs of all time. While an official release date for the game has not yet been announced, fans can eagerly anticipate the upcoming Sand Land movie slated for release later this year. Sand Land is currently in development for PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X.
