In a recent ask me anything session, Stephane Boudon, the Creative Director of Assassin's Creed Mirage, shared some information about the parkour moves that will not be included in the upcoming game. In 2017, Ubisoft's popular action franchise underwent a significant transformation with Assassin's Creed Origins. This game not only introduced a vast open world for players to explore but also incorporated RPG elements like an experience system, loot, and skill trees. This design approach continued in the next two games of the series, veering away from the more linear and story-driven titles.
However, following a series of rumors and leaks, Assassin's Creed Mirage aims to bring about yet another change to the franchise. This new game will depart from the RPG components and expansive open worlds, instead taking inspiration from the original Assassin's Creed. Set in 9th century Baghdad, players will assume the role of a young Basim, who progresses from being a street thief to becoming a skilled assassin within the Brotherhood. Mirage will also feature a smaller environment, reintroducing the classic Black Box style missions initially seen in Assassin's Creed Unity, and limiting Basim's arsenal of tools.
However, while Assassin's Creed Mirage embraces the classic style of games, it does not bring back everything. In a recent Reddit AMA, Assassin's Creed Mirage Creative Director Stephane Boudon confirmed that the parkour system will not completely meet fan expectations from the pre-AC3 titles. Specifically, back ejects and side ejects are not included, preventing players from having Basim jump back or sideways in one seamless motion.
Boudon further discussed the new parkour systems in Assassin's Creed Mirage, explaining that the team placed a primary focus on ensuring movement captured the essence of fluidity and agility. Instead of replicating a particular game in the franchise, Ubisoft drew inspiration from multiple sources and invested considerable effort into fine-tuning the small details to deliver the best sense of control over Basim for players.
Ubisoft has confirmed a variety of returning features that may capture the interest of fans of the older Assassin's Creed games. According to the official Assassin's Creed Twitter account, Mirage players will once again have the opportunity to personalize Basim's base outfits by dyeing them. Social stealth plays a more prominent role, introducing tools such as blow darts and smoke bombs. Additionally, players will have access to a unique desaturated blue-grey color palette reminiscent of the visual effects in the original Assassin's Creed game.
Assassin's Creed Mirage is scheduled for release on October 12, 2023, and will be available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
