Cloe Lacasse equalized in spectacular fashion with a brilliant goal for Arsenal against Manchester United on Friday night, resulting in a thrilling 2-2 draw. This goal allowed the Gunners to secure their first point of the new WSL season. Prior to Lacasse's strike, United seemed poised for victory as Leah Galton and debutant Melvine Malard found the back of the net on either side of halftime. However, Lacasse's stunning shot from outside the penalty area in the dying moments of the second half ensured a memorable draw for Arsenal.
Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall, speaking after the match, hailed the impressive performance of his team. He made six changes to his starting XI after their loss to Liverpool in the WSL opener. In the game, Stina Blackstenius took charge of Arsenal's attack alongside Alessia Russo. It was Blackstenius, the Sweden international, who opened the scoring in the 14th minute. Skillfully evading Hannah Blundell, she unleashed a precise arrowed shot into the far corner.
Arsenal then faced a setback due to a serious mistake by Sabrina D'Angelo, a goalkeeper brought in by Eidevall, resulting in Galton capitalizing on the error. Malard also left her mark by outmaneuvering Amanda Ilestedt and scoring with a toe-poke in the 81st minute.
Despite their efforts and Russo's determination to make an impact in her return to the club where she gained recognition, it seemed like Arsenal was headed for consecutive defeats in their first two matches. However, a moment of brilliance from Lacasse, a summer signing, salvaged a draw and brought the game to a satisfying end.
How Lacasse stole headlines with late show
Tensions were high as fans eagerly anticipated the clash between two WSL title contenders. However, the outcome left spectators perplexed and desiring more clarity.Russo, who was greeted with audible boos from the once-adoring United crowd, put on an impressive performance during her return to her home ground. In the second half, she even struck the woodwork, showcasing her skill and determination. However, the true stars of the night were the league's newcomers - Malard and, in the latter stages of the game, Lacasse.

Cloe Lacasse scored a 93rd minute screamer to rescue a point for Arsenal
Malard and Hinata Miyazawa, the Golden boot winner of the World Cup, were both signed to fill the void left by Russo. With only nine minutes left in the game, they combined to give United a valuable 2-1 lead. However, Lacasse managed to collect the ball in the final seconds and fiercely struck it into the top right corner of Earps' goal. The game showcased a back-and-forth flow, with Arsenal dominating, but it also highlighted the quality and class of both teams who strategically bolstered their squads over the summer in pursuit of becoming WSL champions.
The initiator was rightfully initiated by Russo, who effortlessly dismissed the pressure before passing the ball to Steph Catley, who then located Blackstenius sprinting forward. She outpaced Blundell in a race and skillfully propelled the ball beyond the grip of Earps - who was also a target of interest from Arsenal during the summer transfer period.

D'Angelo, the incoming goalkeeper, committed a significant error, allowing Galton to score the equalizing goal. United's substitute, Malard, made an impressive debut by capitalizing on an opportunity and giving the team a 2-1 lead. Then, Lacasse came onto the field as Eidevall's final attempt to turn things around. It was clear from the moment she entered that she was determined to make a strong impression, energetically moving around the pitch and providing her teammates with a reliable option.
Eidevall: We can't be greedy - happy with point
Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall praised her performance, saying, "She received a pass in a presentable position from Lia Walti, and what followed was pure magic as she skillfully stepped beyond three red shirts, ultimately sealing a share of the points with a beautiful goal."The performance was tremendous, as it is rare for opposing teams to outshine us, particularly considering our numerous goalscoring opportunities. It is crucial to align our efforts with the desired outcome.
Looking back, we cannot help but feel disheartened that we did not emerge victorious, considering the abundance of chances we had.
Perhaps we are overly ambitious when it comes to scoring goals in the final moments of a match. While we are content with the draw, we truly deserved to come out as winners. There is a significant contrast compared to the Liverpool game; our offensive play showcased more vigor and fluidity. It was truly enjoyable to witness.
Regarding the six alterations I made in Arsenal's starting lineup, I must say that we began with one team and concluded with a completely different one. Our finishing was far superior to that of Manchester United. In that aspect, we executed our strategy excellently.
Skinner: Top level game good advert for WSL
Manchester United manager Marc Skinner:"I can't be prouder of the players. They've only had eight sessions as a collective. They gave it everything.
Arsenal scored a late goal today, and they deserve credit for it. The match was of a high standard, something that fans would enjoy watching.
"It's like a game of cat and mouse. Their initial goal was straightforward; we were caught off guard in the channel, and we feel disappointed about that. However, we demonstrated our resilience and turned the tables."
"Occasionally, they managed to score an extraordinary goal at the last moment. In such situations, we must adopt an attacking approach. As Manchester United, playing at home, it is imperative that we always take the initiative and attack."
