Unfortunately, Kes' contributions are often disregarded or completely denied by critics, particularly after her character's decline and departure in season 4 of Star Trek: Voyager. However, in the early seasons, Kes exhibited numerous qualities that made her truly exceptional. She possessed an ability to see the goodness in everyone, as demonstrated by her romantic connection with Neelix (Ethan Phillips). Her inherent compassion and natural empathy made her the perfect counterpart to the initially cynical Doctor. Kes & The Doctor's Voyager Relationship Was Great

In Star Trek: Voyager season 1, the Doctor and Kes develop a captivating friendship that challenges societal stereotypes and allows them to blossom as unique individuals. Initially, the Doctor is only seen as the Emergency Medical Hologram, a programmed entity designed to serve a specific function in the absence of an organic medical professional. Voyager Dropping The Doctor’s Friendship Led To Kes' Character Decline

As the series progresses, Voyager appears to disregard the importance of this friendship. Neelix's constant jealousy and possessiveness cause Kes to distance herself from other characters, leaving her with little to do besides focusing solely on him. Additionally, as Kes develops her natural telepathic abilities, she spends more time with Lieutenant Tuvok, a Vulcan who discourages her previous displays of delight and joy. While she still remains a presence in the sickbay as the Doctor's field medic, the lack of their mutually beneficial friendship causes her character development to stagnate. Although Neelix and Kes end their relationship in season 3 of Star Trek: Voyager, the damage done to Kes's character is irreparable by this point.
