Attention! Spoilers ahead for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.
Simon Pegg, who stars in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, reveals a fascinating detail about one of the movie's chilling scenes. Pegg recorded the dialogue for this scene using his own phone. In this installment directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Tom Cruise's character, Ethan Hunt, engages in a high-stakes battle against a dangerous new adversary to gain control over an artificial intelligence called The Entity. During a particularly spine-tingling moment in the film, The Entity assumes the identity of Benji, Pegg's character, and transmits incorrect information through Ethan's earpiece, inadvertently leading to the demise of Ilsa (played by Rebecca Ferguson).
Following the release of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Pegg reveals to SlashFilm that he actually recorded his dialogue as The Entity on his phone from home. According to Pegg, there were numerous discussions about The Entity's version of Benji's voice and what it should sound like. Pegg explains that a lot of the content used in the film was recorded on his phone while he was at home, and he later did additional ADR in the edit. Ultimately, they decided to use the recordings from his phone because they felt it captured the desired tone the best.
The Entity Is Mission: Impossible's Most Formidable Villain Yet
Because you're right, the outcome could have resembled HAL in '2001' or it could have taken on a more lighthearted tone. However, the concept revolves around this recording of Benji's voice during his conversation with the bomb, which has now transformed into an entity that embodies him. The mere fact that this Entity has possessed one of Ethan's closest allies creates a sense of intense horror, akin to a chilling scene from a horror movie. Every time I watch it, I can't help but feel a bone-chilling sensation. The sound of it, compelling Ilsa (Rebecca Ferguson) to head towards the bridge, is enough to send shivers down my spine.
Throughout the preceding six Mission: Impossible films, Ethan has confronted adversaries of immense power. From the late Philip Seymour Hoffman's Owen Davian, to Sean Harris' Soloman Lane, and to Henry Cavill's August Walker/ John Lark. These individuals, however, are merely human. In Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, Esai Morales' Gabriel assumes the role of the palpable antagonist, while The Entity embodies the overarching menace that looms over the movie.
The Entity is not only the most relevant villain in the franchise's history, but it is also a completely new challenge for Ethan. With the power to imitate Ethan's closest allies, manipulate virtual information, manipulate people, and track him across the globe, The Entity operates on a level unlike anything Ethan has faced before.
Furthermore, The Entity is the first antagonist to successfully kill off one of the central heroes in Mission: Impossible. Although Gabriel physically delivers the fatal blow to Ilsa, it is ultimately The Entity that orchestrates the events leading to her death. How Ethan and his team will defeat this AI villain in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two remains unknown, but it is already clear that it will be their most difficult mission yet.
