Hollywood royalty, the Coppola family has a long-standing legacy of talent that spans generations, indicating that their prominence is here to stay.
The prominent lineage commenced with Carmine Coppola, an orchestra conductor and Oscar-winning film composer, along with his wife, Italia Pennino, who bore three children: August Floyd Coppola, Francis Ford Coppola, and Talia Shire.
All three siblings went on to welcome their own famous children. August, who passed away in 2009, was the father of three children, including actor Nicolas Cage. Francis and his wife Eleanor Neil welcomed Gian-Carlo, Roman and Sofia Coppola in 1963, 1965 and 1971, respectively. Shire and her late husband Jack Schwartzman were parents to sons Jason and Robert Schwartzman.
In the film industry, the family has achieved significant success. Carmine and Italia’s descendants have accumulated a total of 23 Academy Award nominations and have won a total of nine, including best picture, best director, best actor, best original screenplay, best adapted screenplay, and best original score.

Francis Ford Coppola
Francis is recognized as one of the greatest film directors in history, having directed The Godfather trilogy, Apocalypse Now, The Outsiders, Bram Stoker's Dracula, and other Oscar-nominated films. He involved his parents in creating the score for The Godfather and won his first Academy Award in 1970 for best original screenplay for Patton. His marriage to Neil resulted in three children, Gian-Carlo, Roman, and Sofia, tragically losing Gian-Carlo in a boating accident in 1986 at the age of 22.

Talia Shire
Shire, a renowned actress, is most famous for portraying Connie Corleone in The Godfather trilogy and Adrian Balboa in the Rocky franchise. She earned Oscar nominations for her performances in both film series.
Talia was previously married to composer David Shire from 1970 to 1980. They had a son, screenwriter and producer Matthew Shire, in 1975 before their separation. Talia then married Jack and had two more sons, Jason and Robert, before Jack passed away from cancer in 1994 at the age of 61.

Sofia Coppola
Francis’ daughter Sofia followed in her father’s footsteps, becoming a renowned director and screenwriter. Before discovering her passion behind the camera, she had small roles in her father’s films, making her onscreen debut in The Godfather before appearing in The Outsiders, Peggy Sue Got Married, and Rumble Fish.
In 1999, Sofia made her directorial debut with The Virgin Suicides. A few years later, she directed Lost in Translation, which earned her Oscar nominations for best director and best picture. She ultimately won the award for best original screenplay. Sofia has also directed Marie Antoinette, The Bling Ring, Priscilla, and more.
Sofia was previously wed to director Spike Jonze from 1999 to 2003. She later found love with Phoenix frontman Thomas Mars. The couple then welcomed daughters Romy and Cosima in 2006 and 2010, respectively.

Roman Coppola
Following in the footsteps of his father and sister, Roman pursued a career as a director. He has collaborated with Francis and Sofia on various projects, and has also taken the helm on films such as 2001’s CQ and 2012’s A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III. In addition to his film work, Roman has directed music videos for notable bands like The Strokes, Daft Punk, Green Day, and Phoenix. In 2007, he assumed the role of president at American Zoetrope, the film production company founded by his father and George Lucas. Roman is married to voice actress Jennifer Furches, and together they have three children.

Nicolas Cage
Cage, the youngest son of August, burst onto the film scene with his debut in 1982’s Fast Times at Ridgemont High. He has since graced the screen in a number of iconic projects, including National Treasure, Face/Off, Moonstruck, and Raising Arizona. His outstanding performance in 2002’s Adaptation earned him an Academy Award nomination, while he clinched the best actor award for his role in 1995’s Leaving Las Vegas.
As Cage made a name for himself in Hollywood, he made the decision to not use his family's last name for his professional career.
"I wanted to demonstrate that I had something to offer that wasn't just due to being part of the Coppola family," he explained to GQ in March 2022. "I believed that I had a distinct way of perceiving and interpreting things."
Cage has had five marriages and is the father of three children. He was previously married to Patricia Arquette, Lisa Marie Presley, Alice Kim and Erika Koike. He has a son named Weston with ex Christina Fulton, a son named Kal-El with Kim, and a daughter named August Francesca with his fifth wife Riko Shibata.

Jason Schwartzman
Talia's eldest son Jason made his film debut in Wes Anderson's 2008 movie Rushmore. He has since worked with Anderson multiple times on films such as The Darjeeling Limited, Moonrise Kingdom, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The French Dispatch, and Asteroid City. Jason has also appeared in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and Bored to Death, among others. Additionally, he is a musician and was the drummer for the band Phantom Planet from 1994 to 2003. Jason is married to designer Brady Cunningham, and they have two daughters, Marlowe Rivers and Una.

Robert Schwartzman
Jason’s sibling, known as Robert Carmine, has also ventured into the world of acting. He marked his film debut in The Virgin Suicides in 1999, but is most recognized for his portrayal of Michael Moscovitz in The Princess Diaries. In addition to his acting career, he has been the lead singer of the band Rooney since 1999. (The group even made a special appearance on an episode of The O.C. in 2004.)
Later on in his professional journey, Robert transitioned into the role of director. He has contributed to various projects such as Dreamland, The Unicorn, The Argument, Hung Up on a Dream: The Zombies Documentary, and The Good Half. Additionally, in 2013, he collaborated on the soundtrack for his cousin Gia’s film Palo Alto.

Gia Coppola
Gia, born as Gian-Carla, is the daughter of Jacqui Getty and the late Gian-Carlo, who passed away while Jacqui was pregnant with Gia. In 2013, Gia made her directorial debut with the film Palo Alto, which featured a score co-written by her cousin Robert. She has since been involved in various projects, including directing music videos for Carly Rae Jepsen and the 2020 film Mainstream.
