Summary
In season 1, Wednesday from the Netflix series 'Wednesday' showed very limited happiness, but there were a few instances where she couldn't help but crack a smile.
Despite her dark and gloomy disposition, Wednesday's persona in the show unveiled a fervent commitment to justice and a vehement disdain for bullying. Consequently, she frequently basked in satisfaction whenever her adversaries received their rightful retribution.
Wednesday's authentic smile exclusively graced her countenance in the presence of her cherished Uncle Fester, demonstrating their extraordinary bond and exemplifying the unwavering constancy within the Addams Family.
In season 1 of the Netflix series, the titular character of Wednesday, known for her serious and gloomy demeanor, had rare moments of happiness. This adaptation of the Addams Family took a new approach by exploring Wednesday's life in high school, adding a fresh perspective to her character. Unlike the traditional version, this Wednesday was even more brooding and dark, which made happiness a scarce occurrence. However, in the midst of her particularly dreadful circumstances in season 1, Wednesday couldn't help but reveal a smile.
Season 1 of Wednesday established the Netflix rendition of the Addams Family character, portrayed with impeccable deadpan delivery by actress Jenna Ortega. Like previous adaptations, Wednesday remains deeply serious and captivated by all things macabre, sinister, and decaying. She despises brightness and color, as well as those who find joy in them (or so she claims). Nonetheless, it would be inaccurate to say that nothing brings Wednesday happiness. Only a handful of moments throughout season 1 displayed this happiness on Wednesday's face, each exposing the intricate layers of her persona.
7 The Piranha Scene That Started It All
Prior to attending Nevermore Academy, Wednesday had attended a normie high school where she was always considered peculiar, even among her fellow outcasts. Although she likely faced difficulties with her classmates, Wednesday mostly refrained from causing trouble. However, everything changed in season 1 when she discovered that her brother Pugsley had been bullied and locked in a locker. This incident was the breaking point for Wednesday. Determined to take action, she acquired bags of hungry piranhas and released them into a pool where the bullies congregated.
It was in this moment that audiences witnessed Wednesday's first smile. As the camera shifted from the boy being nibbled by the flesh-eating fish to Wednesday's face, it became evident that she was thoroughly enjoying the spectacle. However, her satisfaction did not stem from the pain inflicted upon a random stranger. Wednesday claimed to take pleasure in witnessing people suffer, but only those who deserved it. This version of Wednesday's character showcased her strong passion for justice, particularly when it came to addressing bullying, an issue that she simply refused to tolerate.
6 When Wednesday Decided To Like Nevermore
Wednesday came to realize that Nevermore was a much better fit for her than the typical high school, although it took some time for her to understand this. She had been resistant because it was what her parents, especially Morticia, wanted for her, and Wednesday was going through a rebellious phase in season 1. However, once she discovered that someone was trying to kill her and there was a deadly monster in Jericho that everyone was determined to hide, she began to think that her time at Nevermore might not be so terrible after all.
This marked the second occasion when Wednesday allowed herself to crack a smile. It was a subtle moment, not quite a full grin, but it held significance. It further supported the notion that the only things that brought her joy were the thrill of pain and the presence of murder. While this held true to some extent, the subsequent events in Wednesday season 1 would demonstrate that she was indeed capable of experiencing rare moments of connection.
5 During The Blood Rain At The Rave’N
The Rave'N dance in Wednesday season 1 quickly became the most iconic scene of the Netflix series, thanks to Wednesday's mesmerizing gothic dance solo. It offered a rare glimpse of her letting loose, although it was unfortunate that it was performed for the villain Tyler. Nevertheless, it added another captivating dimension to Wednesday's character. The climax of the evening occurred when the boys from Jericho mischiefously released red paint through Nevermore's sprinkler system, creating a breathtaking shower of what appeared to be blood. Naturally, this unexpected twist only heightened Wednesday's enjoyment.
While she was slightly disappointed that the paint wasn't genuine pig's blood, Wednesday relished in her own Carrie moment. This caused a subtle smile to form on her face, growing ever so slightly as she observed the other Nevermore students scampering to escape the crimson droplets. As always, Wednesday found joy in the terror of others.
4 When Getting Into The 'Vengeful Spirit' Of The Poe Cup
Despite her tendency to find pleasure in the pain and suffering of those she believed deserved it, Wednesday occasionally allowed glimpses of her inner kindness. Enid, one of the few students at Nevermore whom Wednesday genuinely cared for, had been devastated upon discovering that her Poe Cup team was short one member, all thanks to Bianca Barclay. Initially reluctant to assist, Wednesday eventually concluded that Bianca warranted her own dose of retribution. With the help of Thing, Wednesday devised a plan and successfully aided Enid in securing victory.
As Enid rejoiced in their unexpected triumph, Wednesday maintained her composure, but couldn't resist a sly smile when her roommate commended her for embracing the school spirit. In response, Wednesday simply remarked that Enid had forgotten to mention it was a "dark, vengeful spirit."
3 After Figuring Out The Nightshade ‘Snap Twice’ Clue
As Wednesday examined the drawing that Rowan Laslow had attempted to kill her for, she found herself standing before the statue of Edgar Allen Poe, guarding the headquarters of the Nightshade Society. This clandestine organization had been established centuries ago by Wednesday's ancestor, Goody Addams. Surprisingly, the key to accessing the concealed room behind the Poe statue was to hum a simple yet familiar tune, recognizable to fans of the Addams Family.
As Wednesday deciphered the sequence of riddles and marked the corresponding letters, she uncovered the code that spelled "snap twice." A smile crept across her face, although she knew that the character who had invented these challenges was unaware of the age-old Addams Family theme song. Nonetheless, her subtle smirk drew attention to this intriguing detail.
2 While Playing Cello & Burning The Crackstone Statue
Wednesday relished chaos, making it impossible for her to resist the chance to incite frenzy among the entire population of Jericho. The town revered the pilgrim Joseph Crackstone, unaware that he had once set ablaze a barn housing outcasts, a wicked act that Wednesday's ancestor, Goody Addams, had cursed him for. However, upon discovering this dark history, Wednesday couldn't bear to let a statue honoring Crackstone be erected without opposition. With the help of Thing, she orchestrated the complete destruction of the event.
While the townspeople scattered in panic, Wednesday defiantly remained in her position, skillfully playing her cello to complement the dancing flames. Predictably, Principle Weems immediately suspected her, but Wednesday only allowed herself a subtle smile as their eyes locked from across the square.
1 When Wednesday Saw Uncle Fester
In all of season 1 of Wednesday, there was only one occasion when Wednesday truly smiled, and it was when she realized that the mysterious person following her was her beloved Uncle Fester. This revelation was also thrilling for the viewers, as Fester has always been a beloved character in The Addams Family. Throughout the various adaptations of the classic series, Wednesday and Fester have always shared a special connection, and this was immediately evident when his character was introduced in Wednesday.
Although Fester's presence in Wednesday was brief, the fact that this was the only instance where the main character genuinely smiled speaks volumes. In Netflix's portrayal of these eccentric characters, Wednesday's relationship with her parents was complex, but it was reassuring to see that little had changed between her and Fester. Hopefully, Fester will have a more prominent role in season 2 of Wednesday, accompanied by a few more genuine smiles from our favorite Nevermore student.
