The highly anticipated Sabretooth War preview pages are delivering on the story's promise of being the most violent Wolverine tale to date. With Wolverine's 50th birthday approaching in 2024, Marvel is gearing up for the celebration by kicking off the festivities with a gory X-Men death.
In the wake of the Hellfire Gala Massacre and the persecution of mutants, Wolverine has been on the run for months. With the help of old allies like the Hulk, Spider-Man, and Captain America, he sought out his surviving clones. However, now that his clones are taken care of, he's facing a showdown with his long-time nemesis, Sabretooth. Not everyone will survive this confrontation, not even in the first issue.
Wolverine’s bloody Sabretooth War kicks off with the violent murder of the X-Men
Preview pages for Wolverine #41 tease a violent confrontation after Sabretooth has killed the original X-Men.
The depiction of violence in this mainstream Marvel title is remarkably graphic. Iceman, Angel, and Beast are depicted as being crucified, while the remains of Cyclops, with his skull split open, are shown laying at Sabretooth’s feet.
Marvel ComicsWolverine: Sabretooth War previews reveal a whole bunch of dead X-Men.
Unsurprisingly, Sabretooth War was based on the idea that Marvel would be presenting the “most brutal Wolverine story ever.” This warning is prominently displayed on the cover of the issue, alerting readers to the intense content. Throughout the years, Wolverine and Sabretooth have engaged in numerous confrontations, often culminating in violent battles. Sabretooth has made numerous attempts to kill Wolverine on his birthday, sparking countless fights.
Multiple fights have ended with a sense of finality. In Wolverine (Vol. 2) #90, Wolverine drove a claw into Sabretooth’s brain, essentially lobotomizing him and transforming him into an anti-hero until his healing factor fixed the damage. In a subsequent battle in Wolverine (Vol. 3) #55, Wolverine decapitated Sabretooth, only to later discover that it was actually a clone.
The preview of Sabretooth War is promising some of the most brutal gore ever seen in Marvel, setting fans up for a display of intense violence. Look out for Wolverine #41, hitting stands on January 10, and stay tuned to Dexerto for more Wolverine and Marvel Comics news.
