Why It Will Be Difficult To Continue Mission: Impossible Without Tom Cruise

In 2022, Tom Cruise reprised his iconic role as Pete Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick. While the sequel, directed by Joseph Kosinki, focused primarily on Maverick, it also introduced a new generation of elite pilots. Miles Teller played Rooster, the son of Goose, and Glen Powell portrayed Hangman. This means that Paramount has the opportunity to expand the Top Gun franchise beyond Cruise's Maverick, as there are two clear successors who can take the lead in future installments. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for Mission: Impossible, making it much more challenging for the studio to continue building the franchise.
The action-spy series, Mission: Impossible, has confirmed the continuation of the franchise with an upcoming installment titled Dead Reckoning Part Two. Speculations have arisen regarding this potentially being the final chapter, possibly marking the end of Tom Cruise's character, Ethan. However, Cruise himself has hinted at his intention to portray the daring operative for several more years. While this may be feasible, there will eventually come a time when he will have to retire the role. At that point, Paramount may have no choice but to conclude the franchise, as no other actor possesses the ability to execute the movies' signature stunts like Cruise. While visual effects could be utilized to replicate these stunts, they would lack the thrill and excitement. The duration of Cruise's effective portrayal of Hunt beyond Mission: Impossible -- Dead Reckoning Part One remains unknown. Nonetheless, with no plans to slow down, he may lead the franchise until its tenth film. In making these decisions, Cruise may need to be exceptionally careful in selecting which projects to prioritize, given the demand for a potential Top Gun 3.
