Cassidy can now reduce the damage he takes by 75% after utilizing Combat Roll, enabling him to survive powerful assaults such as D.Va's ultimate. Cassidy's Combat Roll in Overwatch 2 has recently received a buff that allows him to survive a close-range D.Va bomb. This upgraded survival tool has left numerous Overwatch 2 players puzzled and frustrated.
In Overwatch 2, Cole Cassidy is a renowned DPS hero. This gunslinging cowboy, voiced by the talented actor Matt Mercer known for his roles in Baldur's Gate 3, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, has undergone several alterations to his abilities throughout the years, particularly with his Flashbang, which has now become the Magnetic Grenade.
In Overwatch 2 Season 7's balance changes, Cassidy's Combat Roll received a significant buff. Previously used primarily for movement and automatic reload, the Combat Roll now offers a higher damage reduction effect. Specifically, the damage reduction has been increased from 50% to 75%. This enhancement allowed Cassidy to withstand powerful attacks, such as D.Va's ultimate ability, Self-Destruct. A shared Overwatch 2 clip on Reddit by Nukacherrypng demonstrates how Cassidy, with just 25 health remaining, survived D.Va's ultimate, which typically inflicts 800 damage. It's worth noting that D.Va's ultimate has the highest damage output in the game, only rivaled by Junkrat's RIP-Tire. Cassidy's successful survival was made possible by a well-timed Combat Roll, which mitigated the damage to a mere 200, a fraction of what he was expected to endure. It's important to highlight that D.Va's ultimate can deal up to 1000 damage to targets in close proximity. Therefore, had Cassidy been slightly closer to the exploding mech, he would not have been able to withstand the blast. Regardless, the fact that he could endure such a powerful attack, particularly given his close proximity, is noteworthy.
Many Overwatch 2 players are perplexed by this buff. Several players believed Cassidy, who consistently performs well across all ranks, didn't require a buff, specifically for his Combat Roll. Others found it strange that he could survive the ability at all; unlike heroes like Reaper or Mei who can avoid the explosion using their immunity abilities, even Overwatch 2 tanks are unable to reduce the damage without barriers such as Reinhardt or Zarya.
Regardless, some players found amusement in the absurdity of a cowboy evading a massive explosion simply by rolling through it. Fans of FromSoftware games couldn't help but make comparisons, considering how dodge rolls are typically necessary to defeat bosses in games like Elden Ring and Dark Souls, and made jokes about which Overwatch 2 hero would make the best Soulslike boss. Cassidy players looking to survive some of the deadliest abilities in Overwatch 2 should strive to master this Combat Roll utility while they can, as it may be reverted in the future.
Overwatch 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
