A player of Overwatch 2 successfully won a match using a Wii controller connected to a laptop, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in the Blizzard hero shooter. Despite the Nintendo Wii being released in 2012 and not officially compatible with the game, this player managed to recreate the experience using current technology. Since Overwatch 2's release in 2022, it has received mixed feedback but continues to receive updates and new content through a live service model. These updates include new heroes, maps, events, cosmetics, game modes, and more.
Reddit user Tin_Can0624 recently shared a video showcasing their unconventional laptop setup for playing Overwatch 2. Instead of using the traditional keyboard and touchpad, Tin_Can0624 has opted to control their hero using a paired Wii remote. In the video, they demonstrate how the Wii Nunchuk is used for character movement, while the Wii remote handles aiming, which played a significant role in their victorious Overwatch match. Unlike other gamers who have used the Wii remote for aiming in shooting games, Tin_Can0624 has cleverly incorporated the controller's tilting capabilities for a quick 180-degree turn and accurate vertical movements on the screen.
According to Tin_Can0624, they were playing as Moira on the Overwatch 2 map called Dorado, a location carried over from the original Overwatch. They claim to have achieved approximately one kill per gyroscopic movement, implying that opponents in Overwatch 2 could potentially evade their attacks by moving out of the Wii remote's field of view. A fellow Overwatch 2 fan suggested that with practice, utilizing the Wii sensor bar instead of relying solely on the tilt controls could result in even more precise aiming.
Tin_Can0624 easily connected their Wii remote to their laptop using the Bluetooth technology. However, the aiming may require improvement in order to achieve the competitive gameplay levels of Overwatch 2. Since the aiming is more tilt-based compared to other Nintendo Wii shooters, the gameplay experience of Overwatch 2 may not have been exactly what it would have been if it had been released during the seventh generation of consoles. Nevertheless, achieving victory with the unique controllers of the Wii is noteworthy.
Overwatch 2 is currently available for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
