The MAX streaming service, formerly known as HBO Max, removed the initial trailer for Zack Snyder's Justice League. Despite the film's immense popularity in international markets and the strain it placed on the platform's servers, Warner Bros. (WB) decided not to disclose the official numbers. It seems that WB views the Snyderverse as a finished chapter, despite the success of Zack Snyder's Justice League on the streaming platform. Consequently, this approach has paved the way for James Gunn's franchise reboot, and MAX is taking it even further by eliminating any trace of the Snyderverse franchise from its history.
MAX silently removed the trailer for Zack Snyder's Justice League, which had reportedly gained 31 million views on its YouTube channel. The existence of the Snyder Cut was doubted by several critics and journalists, a skepticism that held some validity given the need for additional footage to be filmed. Nevertheless, fans, Snyder, and the cast and crew fought for its release. However, Warner Bros seemed to have preferred the skepticism of critics and journalists, as the deletion of the trailer from their YouTube channel appears to be a strategic move to encourage fans to move on. This ongoing confusion within the company regarding Warner Bros and the DC brand is indicative of a divide on the best direction for the DC franchise.
While WB Executives like Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy wanted to continue with the Snyderverse, others, including previous executives Toby Emmerich, Walter Hamada, Ann Sarnoff, and current DC Studios CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran, are in favor of starting fresh. This contrast becomes apparent in the upcoming DCU reboot, where Gunn seems to be incorporating his contributions to the franchise (as well as Xolo Maridueña's Blue Beetle) while distancing from anything associated with the Snyderverse. Initially, Christopher Nolan, director of Oppenheimer, seemed to be aligned with the former group before leaving WB for Universal. Nolan had personally chosen Snyder to kickstart the DCEU with Man of Steel. Producer Deborah Snyder revealed that Nolan supported the release of the Snyder Cut and both had to convince Snyder to never watch the studio version of Justice League as it would deeply sadden him.
The removal of the first official trailer from the MAX YouTube page raises concerns for fans who were hoping for the restoration of the Snyderverse. This is particularly worrisome considering that there are still two more Justice League films and multiple spinoffs planned in Snyder's larger DCEU story. As a result, some Snyderverse fans have shifted their focus towards alternative means of restoring the Snyderverse, such as advocating for the DC IP to be licensed to a third-party streaming service like Netflix, under a non-exclusive agreement. The removal of the movie's trailer from MAX's YouTube page does not bode well for its availability on the streaming service and provides insight into WBD's perspective on Zack Snyder's Justice League. Currently, Zack Snyder's Justice League can be found on MAX.
