How to trade and buy items in SteamWorld Build
Once the Train Station is repaired, you can engage in trading and purchasing items in SteamWorld Build. This can be achieved by having 120 Workers and 4 Boards, which requires a Forester and a Lumber Mill for production. After completion, the train will arrive every five minutes, and additional functions can be accessed by clicking on the Train Station.
Alternatively, you can explore mines to discover treasure chests containing random items, including blueprints for unlockable infrastructure.
How to initiate item trades
In SteamWorld Build, you can trade items by accessing the Train Station and selecting the plus (+) sign in the Ongoing Trades tab. You are allowed to have a maximum of five active trades simultaneously, but the trade will only take place upon the arrival of the next train, and not instantly.
It is generally not recommended to trade for goods using Money, as the cash earned is typically needed for almost every construction project. Additionally, goods tend to be quite expensive due to the exchange ratio (e.g. 1,000 Money for a single Board).
Instead of using cash to make purchases, consider "bartering" instead. This involves exchanging one type of good for another material, with the rate of exchange varying depending on the items you choose. For example, to obtain one Board, you can trade for 25 Sand, five Scrap, or two Ironium. Additionally, rarer items can fetch a better tradeoff, such as trading two Boards for one Robo Burger.

It's important to note the category so that you can determine which items are suitable for certain buildings. For example, you can only assign the Production Chance item to a production-type building (such as Moonshiner, Lumber Mill, and others). Similarly, equipment-type items can only be selected for specific quarters (such as choosing Digging Bonus for a Miners' Quarter).
