Toby Keith will always be remembered in the Country Music Hall of Fame.
Sarah Trahern, the CEO of the Country Music Association, revealed on Monday, March 18, that Keith, John Anderson, and James Burton are set to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Trahern mentioned that she received the voting results the day after Keith passed away from stomach cancer on February 5.
Trahern shared on Monday that he was saddened by the missed opportunity to inform Toby while he was still alive. Despite this, he believes that Toby is looking down on them with a smile, knowing that he will be 'as good as he once was.' This reference is to Keith's popular 2005 hit single, "As Good As I Once Was."
On February 6, Keith's family revealed that the musician had lost his battle with stomach cancer.
"Toby Keith passed away peacefully last night on February 5th, surrounded by his family. He showed grace and courage in his battle," a statement posted on social media announced. "During this difficult time, we ask for privacy for his family."
Many celebrities honored the memory of the talented artist, with former NFL player Brett Favre sharing about their last conversation with Keith.
During their last conversation, Keith told Favre that he was okay with whatever happens. Favre mentioned this to TMZ Sports on February 7, saying that he stayed in touch with Keith every three months during his battle with cancer. He also shared that Keith had complained about the side effects of chemotherapy before his passing.
Favre shared with the outlet that a man once told him, "I quit chemo and it probably did more damage to me than the cancer did." The man expressed his hope that he didn't quit too late, but he was grateful for the opportunity to perform in some shows. Favre mentioned that Toby faced cancer with grace, faith, and support from his family. He was a talented entertainer and handled the situation as best as he could.
Keith's longtime representative, Elaine Schock, also mentioned that Keith was often "misunderstood" after his passing.
"I really admired Toby Keith," Schock shared in a statement on February 6. "He was incredibly talented, enjoyable to be around, and we would often have lively discussions. Not to mention, he was a fantastic songwriter and singer. Toby was also very kind. I believe he was often misunderstood because people saw him in a certain light, but that was not the whole picture. He had so much depth to him. He was truly one of the bravest individuals I had the privilege of knowing."
After revealing his battle with stomach cancer in the fall of 2021, Keith disclosed in June 2022 that he would be taking a hiatus from his music career.
In June 2022, he shared online that he needs some time to relax, recover, and breathe. He mentioned that he is excited to spend this time with his family and looks forward to seeing his fans soon.
Keith is survived by his wife Tricia Lucus, whom he married in 1984. They have three children and four grandchildren.
