Tragedy Strikes as Fan Death Halts LaLiga Clash Between Granada and Athletic Bilbao

Tragedy strikes at LaLiga match as a fan's untimely death leads to suspension Granada vs Athletic Bilbao will resume on Monday after the heartbreaking incident in the stands

The LaLiga game between Granada and Athletic Bilbao will continue on Monday, having been halted following the tragic death of a fan at the Nuevo Los Carmenes stadium. The match was stopped after 17 minutes due to a medical emergency in the stands, and both clubs have since confirmed the passing of a Granada supporter.

"We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and the entire Granada family," stated Granda from the club. Bilbao also expressed, "Athletic Club offers our deepest sympathies. Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones during this difficult time."

Granada's sporting director, Alfredo García Amado, reported that a fan suffered a cardiac arrest after the match. Bilbao had taken a 1-0 lead just six minutes into the match with Iñaki Williams' header before the game was suspended.

Both clubs have confirmed that fans can use their original tickets for Sunday's game, and those unable to attend will receive a refund. The Spanish football federation has stated that the game will recommence in the 17th minute at 9 p.m. (3 p.m. ET) on Monday.

Both clubs announced that fans will be able to use their original tickets for the rescheduled match.

Girona continued its impressive streak with a 4-2 win over Barcelona, taking a two-point lead over Real Madrid in LaLiga standings. Real Madrid had a 1-1 draw against Real Betis on Saturday.

Girona has only suffered one defeat in 16 league matches this season, making them the most surprising team in Europe. The City Football Group (CFG) purchased 44.3% of the Catalan club in 2017, which is led by Pere, the brother of Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola.

CFG is recognized as the top private owner and operator of football clubs globally, with ownership stakes in thirteen major city clubs worldwide. These include Manchester City, the English Premier League champion, and New York City FC in the US, in addition to Girona. Barcelona's loss to Girona puts them in fourth place, trailing by seven points and level with Atletico Madrid.
