Toy Story 5 might mark the end of an era for Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the gang. Here's everything we have gathered so far, including potential release dates, cast, plot rumors, and more.
The year 1995 marked a significant shift in the world of animation. With Disney and DreamWorks dominating the industry, Pixar emerged as a game-changer, capturing the hearts of audiences worldwide.
Under Disney's umbrella, Pixar revolutionized filmmaking with computer-animated movies, starting with their groundbreaking achievement, Toy Story, followed by three adored, Oscar-winning sequels. Three years have passed since the last movie, leaving fans to wonder: will there be a Toy Story 5?
Is Toy Story 5 happening?
Yes, Toy Story 5 has been announced by Disney!
In the company's Q1 earnings call earlier this year, CEO Bob Iger announced (as reported by Collider) that sequels are in development for some of the company's most popular franchises from their animation studios, including Toy Story, Frozen, and Zootopia. He expressed his excitement about the upcoming productions and emphasized the company's commitment to leveraging their iconic brands and franchises.
Is there a Toy Story 5 release date?
No, Toy Story 5 doesn’t have a release date.
Iger officially confirmed the project in February, but there have been minimal updates since then, likely due to the Hollywood strikes that have halted new movie development. Please check back for any new information.
Toy Story 5 cast: Who would return?
It’s expected that Tom Hanks and Tim Allen would reprise their roles as Woody and Buzz for Toy Story 5, but it’s yet to be confirmed.
During a recent interview with Jimmy Fallon to promote The Santa Clause Season 2, Allen shared that Disney had contacted both him and Hanks about the possibility of reprising their roles in the film.
“Bob Iger, the head of Disney, said it was on… he actually said it was gonna happen. They have reached out to Tom and I to reprise the roles. They’re not saying anything about it,” he explained.
"As someone who loves sci-fi, I constantly wonder if four movies were too many, and if five would be too much. From what I've heard, the writer working on it has already written one of the best, and he's committed to getting it right. So, it has the potential to be a fascinating way to bring it all back together."
Before the release of Toy Story 4, which is more of an epilogue than a sequel, Tim Allen expressed his willingness to reprise his role as Buzz Lightyear. "Once you’ve gotten to four, you’re past that trilogy [point], so I don’t see any reason why they wouldn’t do it, certainly. If you ask me, I’d say do five," he told CinemaBlend.
The new voices are a top priority for Disney right now, as producer Mark Nielsen mentioned in a previous interview with The Hollywood Reporter. He stated that Pete Docter is focused on developing original films after the current one. Additionally, Tom Hanks mentioned on The Ellen DeGeneres Show that he believed the series would have longevity, even though Toy Story 4 was the last movie in the franchise.
Several spinoffs like Lightyear, Lamp Life, and Forky Asks a Question have been released, but the studio has not ruled out the possibility of Toy Story 5. During the press day for the fourth movie, Nielsen stated: "Every film we make, we treat it like it's the first and the last film we're ever going to make."
"We push ourselves to keep it together without getting ahead of ourselves. As for a potential Toy Story 5, it's uncertain. We'll deal with that tomorrow. In the meantime, explore our other TV and movie hubs below."

As a passionate fan of the Toy Story franchise, I am thrilled to hear the news that Toy Story 5 is in the works. The announcement has sparked excitement and anticipation among fans worldwide, and I am no exception. The Toy Story movies hold a special place in my heart, and I have been eagerly waiting for the next installment in the series.
The news of a potential conclusion to the Toy Story saga brings mixed feelings. On one hand, I am excited to see how the story of Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the beloved toys will conclude. On the other hand, I am also sad to think that this might be the end of an era. However, I trust that Pixar will deliver a satisfying and heartwarming ending to the franchise that has captured the hearts of audiences for over two decades.
