Tony Bennett's oldest son, Danny Bennett, is reminiscing about his last interaction with his father. During an interview with Hoda Kotb on the Today show, Danny, 69, revealed that Tony's final words to him were simply "Thank you." Danny stated that there was no better way for his father to express his gratitude.
Last month, news broke of Tony's passing at the age of 96. In July, his team confirmed the sad news via social media, sharing that Tony had passed away while still singing and playing the piano. His final song was his first #1 hit, "Because of You." In their statement, they expressed gratitude to Tony for his enduring songs that will live on in their hearts forever.
Tony is survived by his wife Susan Benedetto and his four children. He had two sons, Danny and Dae, whom he co-parented with Patricia Beech, and two daughters, Antonia and Joanna, whom he shared with Sandra Grant.
Danny expressed his gratitude towards his father on Thursday, describing him as a "man of the people." He acknowledged that witnessing this firsthand while growing up was something he never took for granted. Danny described the experience as an incredible journey.
Benedetto, who tied the knot with Tony in 2007 after spending decades together, shared her last moments with her late husband during a candid conversation with Kotb, 58.
On Thursday, she reflected on how the music had always remained a part of him. She mentioned that his very first hit, "Because of You," was the last song he performed before his death. She also shared his last words to her, expressing his love for her. According to her, he would wake up every day, still reaffirming his love. It was evident that he woke up with a sense of happiness each day. Danny, who had been Tony's manager before his passing, also shared his thoughts on witnessing his father's career throughout the years.
"He entered my office once, declaring, 'I was tuned in to MTV.' He confidently asserted, 'I believe I am capable of achieving the same.' Before exiting, I registered his statement with a casual 'Alright,' " he recounted humorously during the Today interview. "I arranged for his appearances on shows hosting up to 60,000 young attendees at RFK Stadium, right between performances by Nine Inch Nails and PJ Harvey. Needless to say, it was quite nerve-wracking."
Danny further commented, "He turned to me and questioned, 'May I inquire something?' Pondering for a moment, he asked, 'Do you envision Frank [Sinatra] partaking in such ventures?' To which I promptly replied, 'No.'"
Tony's revitalized career even resulted in an unexpected collaboration with Lady Gaga, who recently mourned the loss of her cherished and genuine friend.
Through an Instagram post on Monday, July 31, the 37-year-old pop star expressed her everlasting sadness and shared, "I will forever miss my friend. Singing, recording, conversing, and performing on stage with him made my life truly extraordinary." She continued, "Tony and I possessed a unique ability to transport ourselves to another time, revitalizing the music and imparting it with a fresh vitality as a dynamic singing duo. Yet, our connection was unequivocally real."
