Smallville's Tom Welling, known for playing Superman, returns alongside the Justice League and Lex Luthor in a new fan art series. Despite the show's "No tights, no flights" rule, which prevented Welling from fully suiting up as Superman, the series ran for ten seasons and featured various superhero suits. While the DC Universe and Tyler Hoechlin's Superman and Lois series will be the primary locations for live-action Superman, exciting fan art on Instagram by @buffy2ville showcases Welling as an older version of the Man of Steel, along with the rest of the Smallville cast.
Will A Smallville Revival Ever Happen?
Welling's Clark Kent makes a striking comeback in this fan art, showcasing two distinct versions of the Superman costume, both of which are exceptionally impressive. The fan art also features other revered Smallville Justice League heroes, namely Justin Hartley's Green Arrow and Alan Ritchson's Aquaman. In addition, Laura Vandervoort's Supergirl finally dons a full-fledged suit, while Michael Rosenbaum's Lex Luthor completes the lineup in an accurate representation of the villain's armor from the comic books.
After ten seasons, Smallville fans were treated to more stories set in the show's world in two distinct ways. While a live-action Smallville season 11 never materialized with Tom Welling and the rest of the DC series' cast, Clark's adventures as Superman persisted in a series of "Smallville Season 11" comics. In these comics, Welling's Superman encountered Batman, Wonder Woman, and other characters who were absent from the television show.
Welling and Lois Lane actress Erica Durance reprised their roles in the Arrowverse's Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event in live-action. It was revealed that the characters are now married and have two daughters, with Clark no longer having his powers after the end of Smallville. This appearance suggests that Welling and the rest of the cast are unlikely to return for a live-action Smallville sequel series. However, there are plans for a revival of the series in another medium.
Welling and Rosenbaum are currently working on an animated Smallville sequel series. Last year, Welling gave a positive update on the animated series, which will continue the story from the end of Smallville season 10. The new series will feature new stories written by Smallville creators Al Gough and Miles Millar. While this news is promising, it is unclear if James Gunn, the DCU's creative chief, and co-CEO Peter Safran are onboard with the Smallville animated revival as they joined DC Studios after the update was shared.
