At the London premiere of his upcoming film Wonka, Timothée Chalamet humorously admitted that singing and dancing in the movie did not come as naturally to him as his fans might think. Walking the red carpet adorned with cotton candy clouds and chocolate props, the 27-year-old actor joked about his Auto-Tune reliance when questioned about his singing abilities by Extra.
Chalamet takes on the lead role in Paul King's prequel film Wonka, inspired by Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Despite his family's background in performing arts, mastering the film's choreography presented some difficulties. "My mom is a dance teacher, my grandmother was a dancer, and my sister is a dancer, so I was always exposed to it," Chalamet explained. "But there's a significant difference between exposure and actually having to perform."
Embracing his musical side may have been new for Chalamet, but he looks back fondly on making Wonka. “I loved it,” he said. “It was a great learning experience.”

Chalamet has an exceptional singing voice, with a wide range that includes powerful showstoppers as well as moments of genuine emotion. The director praised Chalamet's talent in an interview with Total Film Magazine, and joked that his praise might make him "sound like a crazed fan." This is not the last time we will hear Chalamet's musical abilities, as he is set to play legendary artist Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s upcoming biopic, Going Electric. Chalamet worked with vocal coach Eric Vetro, who also worked with Austin Butler on the 2022 movie Elvis, for both the Wonka and Dylan movies.
Vetro shared with GQ for Chalamet’s November 2023 cover story that he approaches everything with a playful air, yet always maintains a core of real seriousness to ensure he nails it.

TIMOTHÉE CHALAMET portrays Willy Wonka in a film produced by Warner Bros. Pictures.
Vetro explained, "It’s about embodying Dylan’s voice, mannerisms, and speech patterns, and infusing that into the music. When you listen to Timothée perform the music, what you're truly experiencing is the soul of Bob Dylan. It's not about impersonating him, but rather revitalizing the familiar voice."
Chalamet joins Sally Hawkins, Olivia Colman, Rowan Atkinson, and Hugh Grant in the upcoming film Wonka, set to premiere in theaters on December 15. As part of the film’s global press tour, Chalamet has sported vibrant, Wonka-inspired ensembles on the red carpet, including a lavender Prada blazer in Tokyo and a pinstripe Alexander McQueen suit in London.
