The Thunderbolts, a team often seen as the opposite of the Avengers, were initially made up of villains posing as new heroes, with some ultimately abandoning their criminal pasts. Over the course of nearly three decades, the team roster has undergone changes, and in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it currently includes Bucky Barnes (played by Sebastian Stan), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), U.S. Agent (Wyatt Russell), Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Red Guardian (David Harbour), and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko).
Russel addressed the crowd at New York's 92NY community center, discussing his AppleTV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, which also features his father, Kurt Russell. When asked about the Thunderbolts production, he revealed that filming has not yet begun and he has not seen the finished script.
"We have almost started shooting that about 14 times," Russell said (via THR). "I have confidence it's gonna be good. I know everybody is sort of on this Marvel train right now of things not going so well, [but] I know [director] Jake [Schreier] so well and I know how smart Jake is and how much he cares about making something interesting and different and utilizing everyone's talents to the best of their ability."
Russell expressed excitement about the unique and captivating storyline they have developed, hinting that it will not be the typical Marvel movie. He emphasized the need to work hard and not take anything for granted in order to deliver a truly enjoyable and different experience for Marvel fans.
Last year, Marvel's Thunderbolts was announced at San Diego Comic-Con, with the cast assembled for the first time and Schreier set to direct. Eric Pearson and Lee Sung Jin were tasked with writing the screenplay. While filming was initially set to begin in June 2023, it was delayed due to the WGA strike over the summer. Originally planned as the second-to-last film in Phase Five of the MCU, with a release date of December 20, 2024, it was postponed again to July 25, 2025, and became a part of Phase Six.

As a Gen Z netizen, I am eagerly anticipating the release of Marvel's Thunderbolts. The Thunderbolts are a team of villains who pose as heroes, and I think it will be interesting to see how this dynamic plays out on screen. I am also excited to see the different characters interact with each other, as they all have very different personalities and motivations.
I think Wyatt Russell's comments about the film are encouraging. He seems to be confident in the script and the director, and I think that bodes well for the film. I also appreciate his enthusiasm for the project, and I think it shows that he is really invested in making a great movie. Overall, I am very excited for Marvel's Thunderbolts, and I think it has the potential to be one of the best films in the MCU.
