Will there be a Thor 5?

Right now, the MCU is yet to give Thor 5 the greenlight – but if it does, Taika Waitit said it would have to entail something “special”. 

Speaking in an interview for the Thor: Love and Thunder The Official Movie Special book (via Screenrant), the writer-director elucidated that there remains a task of significant importance when it comes to progressing the character. It necessitates a narrative development that not only complements the character's growth, but also injects an element of enjoyment, while presenting fresh challenges that build upon the hurdles he must conquer.

"We cannot have a villain weaker than Hela in Thor 5. We need to escalate and introduce a more formidable antagonist," stated DanielRPK, an insider. Thor 5 has reportedly entered development in October 2023, with a surprising twist. The insider reveals that Taika Waititi will not be directing the movie, leaving Marvel in search of a new director. It remains uncertain if Waititi will return to portray Korg in the fifth installment of the Thor franchise."

Is there a Thor 5 release date?

As of now, the release date for the Marvel movie Thor 5 has not been confirmed. It is not included in the roster for Phase 5 or 6 of the MCU. However, there are several untitled projects scheduled for 2025 and 2026.

Chris Hemsworth's superhero potentially leading one of these projects is currently just speculation. Rest assured, we will provide updates on release date announcements for your convenience.

Thor 5 cast: Who’d be in it?

If Thor 5 were to get the greenlight, we’d certainly be seeing Chris Hemsworth return as the New Asgardian. 

Content Revised: Tessa Thompson is expected to reprise her role as Valkyrie, while Taika Waititi is expected to voice Korg, who both serve as important allies to the main character in the film series. Based on the conclusion of Love and Thunder, it is probable that the cast of Thor 5 will also feature Jaimie Alexander as Sif and India Rose, the real-life daughter of Hemsworth, portraying Thor's adoptive daughter Love.

And then there’s the mid- and post-credits scenes, which indicate the continuation of Russell Crowe’s Zeus and Brett Goldstein’s Hercules.

The cast is uncertain about the future return of Nathalie Portman's The Mighty Thor and whether Thor will be reunited with his brother Loki, who is getting his own spinoff show later this year. Additionally, it remains unclear if Hemsworth would be interested in reprising his role for a fifth film.

In June, during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he expressed his desire not to overstay his welcome as that character on screen. He wants to avoid reaching a point where the audience becomes tired and rolls their eyes upon seeing him in that role. However, he also mentioned that if there is genuine audience interest and a thrilling and enjoyable storyline, he would be open to continuing to portray the character and embracing opportunities to reinvent it.

Thor 5 plot: What would it be about?

As of now, since Thor 5 has not been announced, there is a lack of official plot information. However, director Waititi has dropped a few clues, suggesting that the movie could potentially explore various directions.

In the interview for Thor: Love and Thunder The Official Movie Special book, the filmmaker emphasized the "mythology he comes from." This suggests the possibility of Thor facing increasingly bizarre and extraordinary creatures, monsters, and extraterrestrial beings.

Additionally, the mid-credits scene introduces Zeus sending his son Hercules to eliminate Thor. This could potentially introduce the Greek pantheon into the MCU.

Hercules, renowned for his immense strength and bravery, could potentially face off against Thor initially, but eventually forge a powerful alliance to confront a more formidable adversary together. It is plausible that a villain originating from a different pantheon emerges, resulting in a colossal clash between divine beings on a cosmic level.

As a recent addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), there is a possibility of delving deeper into Love's character, who represents the sole survivor of her species and grapples with her sense of self.
