Sanaa Hamri & Thomas Napper Talk The Wheel Of Time Season 2
: Sanaa Hamri and Thomas Napper shed light on their directing roles in Season 2 of The Wheel of Time. Hamri emphasizes the expansion of the world established in the previous season, while Napper hints at the personal growth and empowerment of the characters who were thrust into their destinies in Season 1. Note: This article was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, and it is important to acknowledge the crucial contributions of the writers and actors from both unions in bringing this show to life.Screen Rant: While traversing the exquisite sets last night and today, a sense of magnificence and vastness envelops the atmosphere. Could you enlighten me regarding the overarching magnitude and scale of this season in relation to its predecessor?
Sanaa Hamri acknowledges that the first season primarily focused on introducing and familiarizing viewers with the young adult characters who are grappling with impending dark forces. In contrast, the second season sees the characters scattered and embarking on individual journeys, which expands the scope of the show and its world. This unique perspective allows the audience to experience the story through the eyes of each character. Furthermore, the second season is characterized by increased action, heightened danger, and a greater emphasis on the characters' decision-making struggles. These elements build upon the solid foundation established in the first season.
You made a valid point regarding the young adult aspect. One noteworthy change in the book is that the characters appear more grown-up when initially introduced. However, the beginning of season 2 exudes a heightened seriousness and maturity. Would you be able to discuss the shift in tone?
Thomas Napper: Building upon what Sanaa just mentioned, I believe in the first series, their destinies are imposed upon them. Coming from a small village known as the Two Rivers, they embark on a journey alongside Moiraine and Lan. In season 2, we witness the characters establishing themselves as individuals and observe their individual growth and development apart from one another. This provides us with an opportunity to delve deeper into their personalities and truly get to know them on a more profound level.
In series 2, numerous environments and locations are introduced. Perrin and Loial find themselves in Arad Doman alongside the Shienarans, while Moraine and Lan reside in Arafel, essentially in hiding or exile. Additionally, Egwene and Nynaeve are depicted as novices in the white tower. From the very beginning of series 2, we are presented with four or five distinct locations.
It should be noted that Rand embarks on his own individual journey. As the characters set out on their respective paths, new locations are unveiled, and additional factions and characters become entwined in the overarching narrative. The process of determining which storylines receive the most prominent focus at any given moment involves careful organization and selection.
In my opinion, the key lies in the scripts. We are fortunate to have a talented showrunner, Rafe Judkins, and his writing team, who focus on refining the script. However, our editorial process plays a crucial role in maintaining a balanced focus and sequence. What I appreciate about season 2 is that the performances truly capture intimacy with the actors, while also incorporating the expansive worlds we showcase.
We consistently introduce various Jordan worlds that our characters must confront. Therefore, it is essential to strike a delicate balance between the grand scope and avoiding losing ourselves within it. Above all else, our show emphasizes staying true to the characters and their development.
Regarding characters, one standout for me is Nynaeve, who possesses immense power yet struggles to find her place. I am interested in how her journey this season delves deeper into her true power.
By the conclusion of season 2, can it be said that we have covered books one through three, while making selections and arrangements of various threads and elements from them? Would you say that is an accurate evaluation?
Sanaa Hamri mentioned that the books serve as a blueprint and a world for us to work with. The stories and art allow for interpretation and freedom in how we portray the characters. This is what makes it so exciting to work with the extensive series of 14 books by Jordan. It's incredible to think about the scope of this project, especially as we're currently in season 2. The question arises of how much further can we go? Is it feasible to expect that we may incorporate elements from books ten and beyond in the future? Can the entire story be adapted into a live action format?
Sanaa Hamri: Our mantra is "The Wheel weaves as the Wheel wills," reflecting the limitless possibilities within Jordan's expansive universe. Nevertheless, our current focus lies on season two. Considering the enormity of this project and the multitude of characters involved, what are the key challenges in bringing it to life in the upcoming season?
Thomas Napper: The show's grandeur and impressive production levels are immediately evident when approaching season 2. It can be overwhelming to join a production of such scale. However, the supportive team, including production designer Ondrej Nekvasil and Justin Gilmer, Dave Hill, and Rafe Judkins, make it feel like a welcoming and close-knit family. Their support is invaluable. Additionally, I want to highlight the remarkable group of actors.
They are incredibly generous and have already developed a strong bond from working together on series 1. In series 2, their camaraderie was even more apparent both on and off set. As a director, they strive to make you feel like an integral part of the team, which is immensely helpful considering the non-stop nature of the production. There are no breaks in the action when working on a show like this. It's a demanding and often stressful experience, but the rewarding work makes it all worth it.
The streaming landscape has undergone significant changes since season 1 premiered. There is now a greater emphasis on more ambitious and serious takes on the genre, evident in shows like House of the Dragon and Rings of Power. With the changing landscape, increased competition, and fan feedback, we are curious if this will have a significant impact on season 2.
In response, I find it to be an incredibly exhilarating time to be involved in the genre. Witnessing the exceptional work being produced by other companies only adds to the excitement of working on this show. It means that the standards are set high, and the audience's expectations are lofty. However, it is important to note that Robert Jordan's expansive universe is in a league of its own. With 5,400 named characters spread across 14 books, this is not a small world. Our main focus remains on Wheel of Time, and our goal is to bring these books and scripts to life in the best possible way.
Sanaa Hamri believes in creating an authentic and high-quality product without comparing it to others. Despite the prevalence of various types of shows, such as dramas, cop shows, and comedies, the aim is for viewers to escape their reality and immerse themselves in the world of Robert Jordan through shows like the Wheel of Time.
And for my last question for both of you, what are you personally most excited for fans to see once season two drops?
Thomas Napper: Wow, that's a good question.
Sanaa Hamri is thrilled for fans to witness the emotional journeys and destinations explored by the characters. Filming took place across various locations including the Czech Republic, parts of Italy, and the Sahara Desert in Morocco. This allows viewers to visually experience the actors and their characters in these diverse settings. Despite the challenges posed by the elements, Hamri hopes that audiences will relish the abundance of stunning visuals and the impressive performances.
There is a substantial influx of new talent, both behind the scenes and in the cast, for the second series of the show. Notable additions include Sharon Gilham for costume design, Davina Lamont for hair and makeup, as well as fresh directors and an impressive new ensemble. Meera Syal joins as Verin, Gary Beadle as Elyas, Rima Te Wiata as Sheriam, and Natasha O'Keeffe as Selene, among others. The arrival of these significant new cast members greatly enhances the show.
Additionally, the storyline introduces a new threat to the kingdom in the form of the invading army, the Seanchan, introduced towards the end of the first series. This storyline unfolds throughout the entirety of the second series, further complicating the challenges faced by the characters. The evolving and maturing nature of these characters as they navigate these obstacles is the essence of the show's narrative.
