The Walking Dead's Most Outrageously Hilarious Zombies Return in Epic Maggie & Negan Spinoff

The Walking Dead brings back its silliest zombies for Maggie & Negan's spinoff in Dead City Episode 4 reveals the return of sleeping zombies, leaving fans intrigued about their true nature and whether they are variants or something entirely different

Spoiler Alert: The latest episode of The Walking Dead: Dead City brings back the most comical zombies in the franchise. Unlike the usual mindless and deadly creatures we're used to, these zombies defy the typical expectations.

Over the years, The Walking Dead has consistently found innovative ways to infuse excitement into the plot by introducing unique and unforgettable zombie encounters. Whether it's a walker with an outrageously repulsive appearance or a particularly resilient undead creature, the franchise never fails to surprise. While some of these scenarios seamlessly integrate into the franchise's narrative, not all of them can claim the same success. Amongst the diverse types of zombies featured in the earliest seasons, one particular classification exemplifies the more absurd aspects of the franchise. Yet, despite their ludicrous nature, these zombies continue to play a significant role in shaping the world of The Walking Dead to this day.

The Walking Dead's Sleeping Zombies Return In Dead City Episode 4

First seen in the comics before making their way to the main show, lurkers are motionless zombies that blend in perfectly with the lifeless bodies. While the majority of walkers tirelessly wander in search of fresh flesh, lurkers remain still until an unsuspecting survivor crosses their path. These creatures frequently tormented the main characters in the original series and continued to do so in episode 4 of The Walking Dead: Dead City. As the main characters cautiously ventured through a subway tunnel, they had to navigate past a group of lurking undead with great care.

Having them around adds a certain level of suspense. Nonetheless, the lurker remains unexplored within the franchise. In contrast to zombies, who don't require energy and can wander endlessly, lurkers defy these expectations, creating confusion with their peculiar behavior. Since these lurkers mainly exist to provide jump scares rather than being grounded in the scientific principles of The Walking Dead's zombies, it becomes challenging to take them seriously.

What Walking Dead's Sleeping Zombies Actually Are (Variants, Or Something Else?)

Currently, The Walking Dead lacks an in-universe explanation for the nature of lurkers and why there may exist zombies who require sleep. Given that the franchise has introduced variants within its canon, it is possible that lurkers have always been a type of variant. These variants, distinct from regular zombies, possess the ability to run and think. Therefore, it could be inferred that the need for sleep is an additional characteristic that differentiates them. However, the necessity for rest seems contradictory, as variants are generally considered superior to regular zombies. In this case, lurkers, as depicted in The Walking Dead: Dead City, could potentially represent an entirely unique breed of zombie.

The Walking Dead: Dead City continues Sunday on AMC.
