Less than a year after the conclusion of The Walking Dead, the highly anticipated spinoff, The Walking Dead: Dead City, is finally debuting. However, the first season of the show falls short in terms of episode count compared to the standard television series. The spinoff takes place several years after the original show's finale and centers around Negan Smith, portrayed by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, and Maggie Greene, played by Lauren Cohan. The story kicks off with Negan and Maggie embarking on a journey to post-apocalyptic New York City in search of Maggie's kidnapped son, Hershel.
The decision to focus on Negan and Maggie in The Walking Dead: Dead City initially raised eyebrows, considering Negan's role in the death of Maggie's husband during the original series. Although season 11 concluded with the two characters establishing a truce, their relationship remains fraught with tension due to their complicated history. Nevertheless, conflict often drives captivating television shows, and it is possible that The Walking Dead: Dead City will defy expectations. Unfortunately, the spinoff's limited number of episodes leaves it with little time to leave a lasting impression on its audience.
The Walking Dead: Dead City Has 5 Episodes Left
The Walking Dead: Dead City series premiere aired on Sunday, June 18, and there are five episodes left in the first season. However, fans can still look forward to other spinoffs from The Walking Dead, such as The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon and The Walking Dead: Rick & Michonne. The remaining episodes of The Walking Dead: Dead City will continue to air on Sundays without any breaks. Episode 2, "Who's There?," will be released on June 25, followed by episode 3, "People Are a Resource," on July 2, episode 4, "Everybody Wins a Prize," on July 9, episode 5, "Stories We Tell Ourselves," on July 16, and the finale, "Doma Smo," on July 23. If the series performs well, there is a possibility that AMC will renew The Walking Dead: Dead City for a second season.
Why The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 1 Is So Short
AMC made a deliberate decision to limit The Walking Dead: Dead City season 1 to just six episodes. The network prioritized quality over quantity, a factor that seemed to diminish in the later seasons of The Walking Dead. Additionally, the television landscape in 2023 has significantly changed compared to ten years ago. Longer seasons consisting of twenty-two episodes airing from September to May are less common now, while shorter seasons with ten episodes released all at once have gained popularity. Hence, AMC's decision to reduce the episode count for The Walking Dead: Dead City is understandable.
