*SPOILER ALERT* The star of The Walking Dead: Dead City, Lauren Cohan, discusses Maggie's ending in season 1 and how her final line can be interpreted. In the last episode, Maggie trades Negan to the Croat for Hershel, believing that it was driven by her desire for revenge. In her final dialogue, Maggie tells Hershel that she intends to put an end to her conflict with Negan and move on from their past.
Speaking before the ongoing SAG-AFTRA actors strike, Cohan discussed the potential interpretation of Maggie's final line in The Walking Dead: Dead City season 1. Although she refrained from confirming its true meaning, Cohan expressed her enthusiasm for its implications in setting up The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2. Read her comments below:
I hesitate to disclose the specific meaning as I have encountered various interpretations of that moment. I enjoy witnessing the diverse perspectives people have on it. However, I personally understand its significance, and it intensifies my excitement for the second season. This opportunity has piqued my curiosity to translate it into writing and film, as it unveils an unanticipated aspect of this character, which I had never envisioned before.
How Will Maggie Finish Things With Negan In Dead City?
After Negan was traded to the Croat by Maggie, he was taken to the true leader of Manhattan, known as the Dama. The Dama then enlisted his help in taking control of the remaining parts of New York City, using the threat of harming Hershel and destroying the Hilltop as leverage. Despite their strained relationship, it is suggested at the end of season 1 of The Walking Dead: Dead City that Negan will assist the Dama in order to protect Hershel.
When Maggie expresses her desire to "finish it" with Negan, it may suggest that she intends to eliminate him. Maggie has been unable to recover from the pain of Negan's murder of Glenn in season 7 of The Walking Dead. Her grief and anger towards Negan have become defining aspects of her character, influencing her decisions in The Walking Dead: Dead City. By killing Negan, Maggie may hope to finally lay her grief to rest.
However, the season finale of The Walking Dead: Dead City also paves the way for Maggie to lend her aid to Negan. Her relentless thirst for vengeance against him causes Hershel to become visibly upset with Maggie. In her final scene, Maggie stumbles upon a drawing created by Dama Hershel, which she speculates could represent an individual from New York City. Instead of seeking revenge against Negan, Maggie might redirect her determination and focus on combating the Dama. Despite her unwavering inability to forgive Negan, it is possible that in the second season of The Walking Dead: Dead City, Maggie will play a pivotal role in saving him.
