Summary
Reva Sevander, the Third Sister Inquisitor, seeks revenge on Obi-Wan but ends up following the same dark path as Darth Vader.
Reva's name serves as a clear comparison to Vader's, highlighting the parallels existing between the two individuals. However, Reva diverges from Vader by ultimately acknowledging the atrocities associated with her journey and choosing to distance herself from the dark side.
Reva Sevander, the Third Sister Inquisitor in Obi-Wan Kenobi, bears a striking resemblance to Darth Vader in Star Wars. Initially portrayed as a formidable Inquisitor driven by a personal vendetta against Obi-Wan, it was revealed that Reva was once a Jedi youngling. In a chilling revelation, Kenobi realized that Reva had witnessed Anakin Skywalker's massacre at the Jedi Temple and confessed to witnessing the slaughter of her own family by him. With a desire for vengeance, Reva survived the ordeal and joined the ranks of the Inquisitors, hoping to get close to Vader and ultimately kill him.
However, Reva failed to realize that she was following Vader's path at an alarming speed. Despite her initial intention to avenge her fellow younglings, she found herself succumbing to the dark side. Her pretense was short-lived, as Vader quickly saw through her charade and anticipated her betrayal. As Obi-Wan Kenobi concluded Reva's part of the story, she was left contemplating whether she had become Darth Vader. While she came dangerously close to emulating him, there was one distinct difference that set her apart, although she still walked in Vader's footsteps, serving as a blatant tribute to the Sith Lord.
Reva Sevander's Name Includes Multiple Nods To Vader
The creative team behind Obi-Wan Kenobi did not keep the connection between the Third Sister and Darth Vader a secret. The name Reva itself is reminiscent of the Sith Lord, with only the removal of the letter "d" to form Vader. Similarly, her last name, Sevander, incorporates Vader by only needing three letters to spell out his name. Unlike Vader, Reva did not choose her name, and her fellow Imperial Inquisitors often refer to her by her given name rather than the title Third Sister associated with their group.
This direct parallel in names reflects both the similarities and overshadowing of Reva by Vader. The Grand Inquisitor regarded her as the least among them, as he informed her. Her abbreviated name serves as another indication that she is a lesser version of Vader, condemned to always fall short when seeking vengeance against him. This not only applies to her pursuits of darkness, but also to her inability to reach the same level as Vader while serving the Inquisitorius. Nevertheless, the goodness remaining in her heart prevents her from committing the worst crimes of the Sith Lord.
Reva And Vader Are Meant To Be The Same AND Opposite
While the parallel is evident, Reva and Vader are not only mirror images of each other but also intended to be opposites. Their connection is deeply rooted in the events of Order 66, with Vader unintentionally shaping Reva into who she has become. Much like Obi-Wan, Vader holds his former master accountable for the necessity of his survival suit, a monstrosity he despises. Fueled by his own rage and self-hatred, Vader shares similarities with Reva, who is driven by the dark side in her quest for vengeance against those who harmed her friends. However, as she treads the path of darkness, she comes dangerously close to becoming the very monster she fears.
Yet, she does not fully succumb to it. In a pivotal moment of realization, Reva understands that killing the young Luke Skywalker would mimic the unspeakable act Vader perpetrated in the Jedi Temple. Recognizing the direction in which her actions were leading her, Reva manages to let go of her hatred and reject the dark side, leading to an intriguing contrast with Vader, as reflected in the inversion of their names. Although it takes decades, Darth Vader ultimately embraces the light side in a momentous event for the Sith. On the other hand, Reva Sevander, broken and motivated by rage, cannot surpass the level of evil associated with her namesake, Obi-Wan Kenobi.
