Summary
The Umbrella Academy has slowly revealed details about the birth mothers of the siblings, but their origins and powers remain largely unknown.
All 43 mothers had the uncommon experience of delivering their children on October 1, 1989, even though they hadn't been pregnant earlier that day.
The stories of the mothers differ: some were unfortunate victims of the Harlan massacre, while others sold their children to Reginald Hargreeves, and a few lost their lives due to the actions of the Handler.
The Umbrella Academy is entering its fourth and final season, leaving many aspects of the team and their origins unknown. Despite the siblings' time-traveling abilities and their search for answers, much remains mysterious about their powers and their biological and adoptive parents. It remains uncertain if the show will provide any explanations, especially with only one season left to tie up loose ends.
However, some information about the birth mothers of the Umbrella siblings has been revealed throughout the series. In the first episode of season 1, it is shown that these extraordinary children were all born on October 1, 1989, around noon. What makes this even more peculiar is that none of the mothers were pregnant earlier that day. While all 43 mothers share this commonality, glimpses have been given into the lives of some of them, offering minor details.
8 Anita Gill, Mother of Lila Pitts
Lila, not officially considered a member of the Umbrella Academy due to her upbringing as a trained assassin for the Temps Commission by the handler, finds herself aligning with the Umbrellas after developing feelings for Diego. Born on October 1, 1989, she is one of the gifted children. In episode 9 of The Umbrella Academy season 2, titled "743," it is revealed that Lila's biological parents, Anita and Ronnie Gill, were murdered by Five on the orders of the Handler. The Gills appeared to have been taking care of their unexpected child before being killed and taken by the Handler.
7 Tatiana, Mother of Viktor Hargreeves
In the opening scene of the first episode of The Umbrella Academy season 1, we witness Viktor Hargreeves' birth and adoption. Tatiana, a young teenage Russian girl, engages in playful banter with a boy at a public swimming pool. Notably, she shows no signs of pregnancy before sharing a quick kiss on the cheek and jumping into the pool. Unexpectedly, she goes into labor right then and there, giving birth to the baby in the water. It is later revealed that Reginald Hargreeves approaches Tatiana soon after the birth, offering to purchase the child. This account is among the clearest in the series, yet it is probable that the other Umbrellas had similarly abrupt and unconventional beginnings before Reginald acquired them from their birth parents.
6 Unknown, Mother of Ben Hargreeves
Ben Hargreeves met an unfortunate demise early in the Umbrella Academy's journey, leaving behind a vague account of his origins and his mother. Documented evidence regarding Ben's background is scarce, given his physical absence. Sources suggest that Ben's mother was a young teenager residing in South Korea when she gave birth to him in 1989. Notably, in the timeline presented in season 3, Ben's mother emerged as the sole survivor of Harlan Cooper's violent outburst, which claimed the lives of the other mothers affiliated with the Umbrella Academy. However, her identity remains undisclosed.
5 Efa, Mother of Number Five
Number Five was born to a butcher named Efa in Dublin, Ireland. In the alternate Sparrow timeline, Efa becomes a victim of the psychic massacre carried out by Harlan Cooper. Like the other mothers, she unexpectedly gives birth to a child on October 1, 1989, and willingly hands him over to the billionaire Reginald Hargreeves. Efa appears to be relatively young when she goes into labor with Number Five.
4 Rachel Herschberger, Mother of Klaus Hargreeves
Due to Klaus' exceptional abilities as a member of the Umbrella Academy and his knack for snooping around, he stumbled upon some intriguing details about his own mother while rummaging through Reginald Hargreeves' checkbook. It was then that he unearthed the shocking revelation that his mother, Rachel Herschberger, hailing from Pennsylvania, had actually sold him to Reginald for the sum of $3000 on October 3, 1989, merely two days after his birth. Notably, Rachel belonged to an Amish community and in the alternate Sparrow's timeline, she also fell victim to Harlan's sudden and violent outburst. As for the original timeline, there remains scant information regarding her.
3 Victoria, Mother of Allison Hargreeves
Allison Hargreeves, like her siblings, was delivered into the world in South Africa on exactly the same date and time. Her biological mother, a dedicated educator, made the heartbreaking choice to relinquish Allison into the custody of Reginald Hargreeves. While Victoria met a tragic fate, along with the others, during the devastating Harlan's massacre, her exact whereabouts in the original timeline remained a mystery.
2 Elena, Mother of Diego Hargreeves
Diego, also known as Number Two in the Umbrella Academy lineup, was born in Northern Mexico. His unexpected home birth took place while his mother, Elena, was preparing food. Shortly after, Elena made the decision to give her newborn son up for adoption, and he was ultimately adopted by Reginald Hargreeves. If we assume that Hargreeves numbered the children in the order he acquired them, it is highly likely that Diego was the second child he obtained. This would mean that the adoption occurred between October 1, 1989, and October 3, 1989, during which time Hargreeves also adopted Klaus, or Number Four.
1 Monica, Mother of Luther Hargreeves
Luther Hargreeves, also known as Number One, was born to a woman named Monica, who hailed from Sweden. It seems that Monica was a career-oriented individual and when she unexpectedly gave birth to a child who was not planned, conceived, or desired, she made the decision to accept money from Reginald Hargreeves in exchange for her son. Except for Ben, all the mothers under the Umbrella Academy's care were also victims of Harlan, due to a psychic link that he had lost control of on the day his mother passed away from a terminal illness. Despite all his adopted siblings eventually leaving, Luther remained the most loyal follower of Hargreeves and continued working for him. Throughout his formative years, he was raised by a robot assistant named Grace and trained by Reginald himself to utilize his powers on daring missions of heroism.
Luther was deeply impacted by his father's death, and when he returned to Earth after his mission on the moon, he learned that Reginald had completely disregarded all of his reports. None of the siblings' mothers seemed to have any obvious connections, but it became evident that a psychic connection existed before the children were born, as Harlan, through this link, caused the death of 26 out of the 43 mothers. It remains to be seen if this connection will be further explored in season 4 of The Umbrella Academy, potentially shedding light on the origins of the heroes.
