James Gunn has once again shed light on the mystery surrounding Groot in the MCU, providing insight into the connection between the character in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and the original version. Marvel Studios took a bold leap in 2014 by introducing the relatively unknown Guardians of the Galaxy, which included the beloved character Groot.
Gunn clarifies in the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 commentary that "Swole Groot" is not the same as the original Groot. Despite growing from a branch of his predecessor, the director emphasizes that the original Groot died in Guardians of the Galaxy and has remained deceased since then. As a result, "Swole Groot" is an entirely distinct character. Here is his full statement:
In this scene, Groot is seen regenerating himself throughout the film. He has transformed into a young adult version of himself, also known as Swole Groot. Although he retains some characteristics of Baby Groot, he is not the same as the Groot from the previous movie. Despite popular belief, this new Groot is not a reincarnation or genetic copy of the original Groot. The first Groot sacrificed himself, resulting in the birth of a completely different Groot.
Swole Groot's Origin Contradicts "I Am Groot's" MCU Status
I have my own justifications for this matter floating in my thoughts. A complete backstory for the character exists, although it is unlikely to ever be disclosed. Nevertheless, he represents a distinct incarnation of Groot.Baby Groot made his debut at the end of the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Since then, he has transformed into Teen Groot and now "Swole Groot." Marvel Studios attempted to capitalize on the character's popularity by releasing the limited series, "I am Groot," which they claim is a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). However, this contradicts the statement made by Gunn, as the show includes a scene where Baby Groot remembers the original Groot's sacrifice in Guardians of the Galaxy. Gunn has expressed his disagreement with this idea, further emphasizing his stance.
Gunn's completion of his Marvel stint with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 raises questions about any potential attempts to reconcile his and the MCU's conflicting views on Groot's fate. The director has always been open about his reluctance to reverse deaths in his films. Although Yondu, played by Michael Rooker, appears in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it is only through Kraglin's vision. However, Marvel Studios now has full control over the use of these cosmic heroes, potentially disregarding Gunn's principle.
With "Swole Groot" remaining an active member of the new Guardians of the Galaxy team, led by Rocket, it is likely that he will return to the MCU in the future. It remains unclear whether Marvel Studios will maintain their stance or eventually concede to Gunn's explanation regarding his connection to the original Groot. Considering the expanding multiverse, finding a solution that incorporates both perspectives could be reasonably feasible.
