Warning: Spoilers for Bleach: The Thousand-Year Blood War, episode #18
Renji unveils a new Bankai in Bleach: The Thousand-Year Blood War, shedding light on the fact that this powerful shinigami technique is far more intricate and secretive than previously thought, even with the shortcuts taken by him and Ichigo.
Bankai represents the ultimate release state of a Zanpakuto, requiring a minimum of 10 years of dedicated training to master. Renji initially acquired Bankai while Rukia was held captive for execution during the Soul Society arc, alongside Ichigo. Despite having considerable experience as a Soul Reaper and holding the position of lieutenant, Renji had yet to complete his intense Bankai training within the expected timeframe, pushing himself to unlock the ability in time to rescue Rukia. Similarly, Ichigo attained Bankai within a mere three days, but it eventually became clear that neither of them had truly reached the full potential of their Bankai.
Renji's Bankai Was Incomplete Because He Rushed to Achieve It
In episode #18 of The Thousand-Year Blood War, Renji experiences a flashback in which he converses with Squad Zero's Ichibe about his Bankai. Ichibe reveals that the name of Renji's Bankai, Hihi-oh Zabimaru, is actually a deception. The Zanpakuto spirit had doubts about Renji's trustworthiness and therefore restricted the full extent of its power. Although the specifics are not provided in the episode, it is likely that Renji's hasty approach to obtaining his Bankai may have contributed to this. However, during Renji's recovery in the Soul King's Palace with Squad Zero, he manages to uncover the true name of his Zanpakuto, Soh-oh Zabimaru, and earn its respect. This allows him to finally unleash the complete potential of his Bankai, enabling him to confront Mask de Masculine with full force.
Zabimaru might have acknowledged that Renji genuinely needed its power to save Rukia, but was not yet capable of utilizing the entire Bankai. Therefore, it granted him access to an incomplete form to provide him with a fighting chance. Interestingly, there is a parallel with Yumichika, who intentionally misidentifies his Zanpakuto's Shikai form, resulting in a weaker manifestation. Regardless, Renji's new Bankai boasts a significant increase in power. It unveils a formidable baboon arm that nearly crushes Mask, as well as a transformed appearance for the sword itself.
Bleach's Bankai Still Hide Many Secrets
No matter what rapid training technique one attempts, it appears that a Zanpakuto's true Bankai cannot be expedited. Any efforts to do so will only result in an early unlocking of a weaker form. Similar to other aspects of the series, fans can't help but feel that Bleach creator Tite Kubo has merely scratched the surface of the numerous secrets surrounding Bankai. There are still numerous unseen Bankai waiting to be revealed in Bleach: The Thousand-Year Blood War, including some that were never featured in the manga. Hopefully, fans will have the opportunity to discover more about the Soul Reaper's ultimate technique. Bleach: The Thousand-Year Blood War can be streamed on Hulu and Disney+.
