Fez's return in That '90s Show lacks an important connection to Red and Kitty Forman from his time in That '70s Show. In this spinoff sequel, Wilmer Valderrama appears in three episodes, alongside Topher Grace, Laura Prepon, Ashton Kutcher, and Mila Kunis, who briefly cameo as their original characters. However, Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp have more prominent roles, allowing them to steal scenes in this new teen sitcom.
Before returning to That '90s Show, Fez was well-loved by fans in That '70s Show. He was a core member of the friend group for all eight seasons, and while the characters knew his real name, "Fez" was a nickname based on "FES" or "Foreign Exchange Student." Fez's origin remained a mystery throughout both series, and his dating mishaps were a recurring joke. While his romance with Jackie in season 8 was widely discussed, a significant fling in That '70s Show is completely ignored in That '90s Show.
Kitty Ignores The Fact That Fez Was Actually Her Son-In-Law In That '70s Show
In That '90s Show season 1, episode 2 titled "Free Leia," Fez makes his first appearance as he reveals himself to be dating Sherri, the next-door neighbor of the Forman family (played by Andrea Anders). The following episode, "Lip Smackers," unveils a surprising revelation when Sherri discloses that her beau is none other than Fez, whom she considers a local celebrity. Interestingly enough, Red and Kitty also know Fez well, but conveniently omit an important detail: Fez was once their son-in-law after a brief marriage to Laurie in season 5 of That '70s Show (portrayed by Lisa Robin Kelly).
While Fez may have had romantic feelings for Laurie, the marriage was primarily a means to prevent his possible deportation following a vandalism arrest. Surprisingly, Laurie took part in this charade by going on their honeymoon with another man. Nevertheless, the marriage served its purpose in enabling Fez to remain in the US. Oddly enough, Red and Kitty conveniently omit this significant event from their history with Fez. Despite still considering Fez as one of Eric's closest friends, sharing this information would have been relevant when Sherri sought advice regarding her complicated relationship with Fez. Admittedly, Red and Kitty might have a compelling justification for disregarding the fact that Fez was once their son-in-law.
Kitty Forgetting Fez & Laurie's Marriage Has A Perfect In-Universe Explanation
In That '70s Show's season 5 finale, Fez's revelation of his marriage to Laurie caused Red to suffer a heart attack. The impact of his daughter marrying Fez was so severe that Red and Kitty may have chosen to erase the memory of the marriage altogether. The heart attack serves as an explanation within the show's universe for their disregard of their deeper connection to Fez in That '90s Show. The time surrounding the marriage reveal was a difficult period for Red and the Forman family, and their desire to forget it is understandable given the negative consequences.
Even without acknowledging Fez as their son-in-law, Kitty maintains a special bond with him, as he has always seen her as a mother figure throughout That '70s Show. While Kitty tries to guide Sherri in her interactions with Fez, she also instinctively protects him, just as she has done with Eric and his friends. With Fez making a commitment to salvage his relationship with Sherri at the finale's conclusion, it's likely that Valderrama will play a role in That '90s Show season 2. The show may continue to overlook important aspects of his past, but Fez and his unpredictable relationships will undoubtedly remain a highlight.
