We' football writers review Sunday's action as Darwin Nunez inspires Liverpool to a dramatic victory at Newcastle, while Man City and Aston Villa chalk up wins.
Has Nunez finally arrived?
The significance of Darwin Nunez's first goal against Newcastle cannot be overstated, as noted by Gary Neville. This moment holds immense importance not only for Liverpool but also for the Uruguayan forward.
Nunez, who arrived for £85m last summer, had been disappointingly inconsistent despite scoring 15 goals last season. However, he redeemed himself by scoring his and the Reds' second goal to complete a remarkable comeback. This match will unquestionably be remembered as one of the standout games of the season, regardless of future events leading up to May.
Klopp seemed to be concerned about Nunez's wastefulness at the beginning of this season, as he was relegated to the fifth choice as a forward.
However, Nunez showcased his ruthless skills at St James' Park. He capitalized on two opportunities and successfully struck them past Nick Pope.
The challenge for Nunez is to show consistency. If he does, this match will be looked back upon as the moment he finally arrived in English football.Joe Shread
Howe humbled by Klopp yet again
If Jurgen Klopp ever took on Eddie Howe in a heads-up poker game, I know where my money would be going.Despite being given the advantage of an opening goal and playing with a one-man advantage for 60 minutes, Howe was once again unable to defeat Klopp's Liverpool. Klopp has now emerged victorious in 13 out of 15 meetings with his counterpart, showcasing his dominance yet again in Liverpool's remarkable win over Newcastle.
Klopp unquestionably dominated the touchline duel. Despite being down to 10 players, Klopp succeeded in tightly organizing Liverpool's defense, aiming to keep Newcastle within reach for a late comeback by utilizing his impactful substitutes.
However, the Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson was rarely put under significant pressure in the second half, with only Miguel Almiron's shot rattling off the post causing any real trouble for him.
Liverpool were not at ease but they were actively participating. With the score remaining 1-0 at the 77th minute, Klopp introduced his secret weapon, Nunez, into the game. Nunez brought a new dynamic as Liverpool's go-to option against the opposing team's reduced number of players. Unlike his previous outings in a Liverpool jersey, Nunez displayed remarkable efficiency in seizing both of his chances.
It will have left Howe's head truly scrambled.Lewis Jones
Rodri sums up City's self belief
Rodri's initial attempt from distance with his weaker foot was a bold and unexpected move. He had other options available, but Bernardo Silva criticized him while Julian Alvarez seemed perplexed. This behavior was out of character for a player known for his consistency in midfield.
After another unsuccessful shot with his right foot, Rodri expressed his frustration through a twirl. It is important to note this moment, as it set the stage for his eventual winning goal for Manchester City in their match against Sheffield United on Sunday. At the 89th minute, with the opposing team having just equalized, Rodri scored the game-winning goal.
Rodri's goal showcased his exceptional technique and highlighted his unwavering self-confidence, much like Erling Haaland's header that opened the scoring despite missing several clear opportunities. Just when it seemed like the game was tilting in favor of the underdog, one of City's key players reminded everyone of their dominance.
Certainly, Rodri has scored more significant goals for City. Winning the Champions League final with a decisive goal is bound to be a standout moment throughout his career. However, this goal serves as another illustration of his ability to step up and make a significant impact when it truly counts for Manchester City.
Blades have reason to believe
Sheffield United's narrow defeats against Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest hinted at their ability to challenge, yet there lingered a concern that they would be outclassed by the Premier League's top teams once they stepped onto the field.
Despite suffering a third consecutive loss, Paul Heckingbottom's team displayed their potential for progress. Sheffield United's previous tenure in the Premier League concluded amidst a series of defeats in empty stadiums caused by the pandemic.
Bramall Lane is transformed when it's packed to capacity. The crowd's intense support or criticism creates a deafening atmosphere, even causing Manchester City to become unnerved by the end of the match.
Unfortunately, Anel Ahmedhovic couldn't produce the much-needed second equalizer to reflect the team's tenacity. However, their tremendous effort cannot be denied, and Heckingbottom remains optimistic about securing additional signings to strengthen the group.
If Cameron Archer can provide greater thrust in the final third, there is reason for Blades supporters to believe. It is Everton at Bramall Lane next.
Resurgent Villa a force to be reckoned with
Aston Villa's devastating 5-1 loss to Newcastle on the opening weekend left many football fans stunned. It is uncommon for a team led by Unai Emery to experience such a heavy defeat. However, the Spanish manager has motivated his players to make a remarkable comeback.
After the defeat, Aston Villa delivered a commanding 4-0 victory against Everton in the Premier League. They continued their winning streak with a resounding 5-0 triumph over Hibernian in the Europa Conference League. Aston Villa's impressive performance carried on as they secured their third consecutive victory within a week, defeating Burnley at Turf Moor.

Matty Cash netted two goals for Aston Villa in their match against Burnley at Turf Moor. Notably, Cash's second goal during the Sunday afternoon clash in Lancashire showcased Villa's smooth passing and cohesive play style under Emery.
Moussa Diaby continues to impress and is already establishing himself as one of the standout signings of the summer. Additionally, the acquisitions of Pau Torres, Youri Tielemans, and Nicolo Zaniolo have provided Emery with valuable alternatives, especially considering the recent surge of injuries that have posed a threat to the team's progress. Since taking over in November 2022, the 51-year-old manager has guided the team to the second-highest number of away victories in the Premier League, only trailing behind Manchester City with a total of 10.
Aside from the abnormal situation at St James' Park, Villa has recently demonstrated their prowess and cannot be underestimated. With their current lineup of players, and undeniably capable manager, they have the potential to stun everyone this season. Dan Sansom
More experience required for Burnley
Burnley fielded their youngest starting XI of the season on the opening day against Manchester City, with an average age of 23 years and 206 days, which stands as the Premier League's most youthful lineup so far. In the subsequent match against Aston Villa, captain Josh Cullen and right-back Connor Roberts, both aged 27, were the oldest players in Vincent Kompany's lineup.
The Clarets, who were recently promoted, have been active in the summer transfer market with their signing spree. They have brought in 11 fresh faces, or rather 13 if we count the loan deals being transformed into permanent ones. However, it is noteworthy that only three of these new recruits are 25 years old or older. The club's strategy primarily revolves around acquiring promising young talent, which is commendable. Nevertheless, it remains doubtful if this approach alone will suffice for their survival in the fiercely competitive Premier League.
Burnley established their Championship title through an impressive 21-match undefeated streak at home. However, their journey back to the top division has begun with back-to-back losses at Turf Moor.
As the transfer window remains open until 11pm on Friday, Kompany still has an opportunity to bring in experienced players to enhance his team's chances of avoiding relegation.
