Liverpool's much-awaited midfield revamp has finally taken place, bidding farewell to the expertise of Jordan Henderson, James Milner, and Fabinho. However, the team's attention is now on the potential gains. The midfield now possesses vigor and innovation.
Alexis Mac Allister is a familiar face to Premier League followers. The midfielder, who is a World Cup victor, not only adds stability to the team but also possesses excellent mobility. Nonetheless, it is the prospect of combining him with fellow newcomer Dominik Szoboszlai that truly piques interest.
This £60m acquisition from RB Leipzig introduces a fresh dynamic to the team, while also evoking a sense of familiarity. The initial triumphs that Klopp achieved at Anfield stemmed from a style of play characterized by relentless intensity. 22-year-old Szoboszlai possesses the ability to replicate such a modus operandi. According to Rene Maric, his athleticism is nothing short of remarkable.

His data clearly indicates consistent physical output. Upon observing his games, it becomes evident that he prioritizes defensive actions over flashy displays, avoiding unnecessary sprints for long distances. Nevertheless, he consistently demonstrates commitment by tirelessly tracking back and engaging in winning duels.
Maric collaborated with Szoboszlai during his early adolescent years at Red Bull Salzburg, monitoring his development until he reached the first-team, where the Austrian coach served as Marco Rose's assistant. The player was introduced to the fundamentals of pressing from a young age.
However, the strong work ethic was consistently evident.
During our morning sessions or on our off-days, as I work in the office, I often catch a glimpse of him on the pitch, effortlessly mastering those incredible free-kicks. His ability is undeniably a blend of natural talent and immense dedication - a true reflection of his character.
Having known him since his younger days, I anticipated that he would undergo significant changes as he grew from the age of 15 or 16. However, witnessing his remarkable physical transformation has been truly astonishing. Not only has he become larger in stature, but he has also managed to retain that unique form of confident humility, which I struggle to describe aptly in English.
He has always been aware of his potential to become world class, and now it is evident that he truly believes he has achieved that status. However, alongside this confidence, he still maintains his love for playing football and his dedication to hard work. This combination is exceptional, in my opinion.
There have already been noticeable moments that showcase his abilities. Three goals in the pre-season have resulted from his corner kicks, proving his knack for creating danger from set pieces. Additionally, his audacious attempt from near the halfway line against Leicester demonstrated his exceptional ball-striking skills, which are considered among the best in the world.
Klopp will be attracted to his ability to creatively break through defenses. After the first pre-season game, the Liverpool manager acknowledged that there was excessive reliance on Trent Alexander-Arnold to initiate plays. Szoboszlai has the potential to fill that role as well.
"His impact will depend on how he is utilized, but his talent is truly remarkable," Maric remarks. "He possesses exceptional ball control and remains ingrained with a footballer's spirit. In other words, he is someone who yearns to be involved, possessing the mindset to resolve challenges in one-on-one situations."
This question regarding Szoboszlai's position at Liverpool is intriguing. Considering his tendency to drift towards the right for Leipzig last season, and with Mac Allister frequently operating in the left channel's half space, it appeared that these two individuals were ideally suited for those attacking positions.

Klopp made a switch in the early pre-season matches, placing Szoboszlai on the left. This change was likely due to Szoboszlai's versatility and ability to feel comfortable in wider positions compared to Mac Allister. This adjustment enables players like Luis Diaz or Diogo Jota to occupy central areas.
Szoboszlai excels in this hybrid role, which is atypical for a Liverpool midfielder. It allows him to isolate himself against defenders while also encouraging him to infiltrate areas where he can take shots or make key passes.
Maric is of the opinion that Szoboszlai has the ability to fulfil that role. In his view, while he is capable of playing as a one-on-one winger, it is not his strongest position as there are other players better suited for that role. Maric suggests that using him as a central attacking midfielder, or as an offensive midfielder who can shift to the wider areas when necessary, would be a more effective way to utilize his talent, potential, and versatility as a player, thereby making him an intriguing prospect.
"He has the remarkable ability to maintain ball control, circulate it effectively throughout the team, and sustain the tempo of the game even under pressure, making him an invaluable player. Initially, I anticipated his move to Newcastle, but Liverpool cunningly secured his services instead. In my opinion, acquiring him was an astute investment."
The crucial factor lies in the combination. Szoboszlai possesses the skills to enhance Liverpool's gameplay when in control of the ball, as well as the physical strength to meet the team's defensive demands. Former midfield lineups under Klopp lacked the former, while the more recent ones have lacked the latter.
Maric concludes, "When he's in top form, he can score stunning goals from 25 meters or provide excellent assists. Even on an off day, he still offers a solid defensive foundation, which is vital for Liverpool and Klopp's preferred style."
Liverpool's long-awaited midfield overhaul has arrived.
