Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2, Episode 5 - "Charades"
If Captain Christopher Pike had still been in command of the USS Enterprise during the events of Star Trek: The Original Series' "Amok Time," the classic Vulcan episode would have gone very differently. In "Amok Time," Mr. Spock goes through the Vulcan mating ritual, pon farr, and goes back to Vulcan to discover that his fiancée, T'Pring, wants to break off their engagement. However, T'Pring's manipulation of Captain James T. Kirk in this episode is not something she would have attempted with Captain Pike.
In "Amok Time," T'Pring invokes the Vulcan ritual combat known as kal-if-fee, intending to dissolve her engagement to Spock, which was arranged when they were children. T'Pring, who is estranged from Spock, desires to marry Stonn instead. However, instead of having Stonn battle Spock to the death, T'Pring chooses Captain Kirk as her champion. Driven by the madness of pon farr, Spock fights Kirk and believes he has killed his own Captain. However, quick thinking from Dr. Leonard McCoy deceives everyone into thinking Kirk has died. Consequently, Spock and T'Pring's bond is broken, allowing her to marry Stonn while Spock resumes his duties on the Starship Enterprise, with Captain Kirk alive and well.
Star Trek: TOS "Amok Time" Would Never Happen With Captain Pike
Considering the information presented in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds regarding T'Pring, Lt. Spock, and Captain Pike, it seems unlikely that T'Pring would subject Pike to the same situation Captain Kirk faced in the TOS episode "Amok Time." In Strange New Worlds, it is revealed that T'Pring and Pike are friends, and she even refers to him as "Chris." In contrast, Kirk had no previous knowledge of T'Pring before "Amok Time," and T'Pring showed no concern for Spock fighting his own Captain to the death as long as her engagement with Spock was broken.
In Star Trek: The Original Series, we learn that Captain Pike is destined to suffer severe disfigurement, which ultimately leads to Captain Kirk taking command of the USS Enterprise. However, if this turn of events did not occur and Pike remained Captain, T'Pring would likely have sought an alternative solution to end her arranged marriage to Spock, rather than forcing Pike to engage in a deadly battle with him. Despite the events of Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 5, T'Pring does not appear to hold any animosity towards Pike and instead blames Spock for not trusting her during their V'Shal engagement ritual. It is worth noting that T'Pring never had the opportunity to meet Captain Kirk, and she did not show any concern for his well-being during "Amok Time." This is quite different from her perspective on Pike, whom she still considers a friend.
Will T'Pring Return In Strange New Worlds?
Following the events of Strange New Worlds season 2, episode 5, where Spock's actions deeply hurt T'Pring, the two decided to put their engagement on hold. Almost immediately, Spock found solace with Nurse Christine Chapel, as they began exploring their intense romantic connection. This raises the question of whether T'Pring will make a comeback in Strange New Worlds, or if their separation in "Charades" is a precursor to their divorce in "Amok Time."
There are indications that T'Pring's return to Strange New Worlds is highly likely, particularly due to the presence of Sybok, Spock's Vulcan half-brother. In Strange New Worlds season 1, episode 7, titled "The Serene Squall," it was revealed that T'Pring is holding Sybok captive at a Vulcan rehabilitation center under the alias Xaverius. This unresolved storyline strongly implies that both T'Pring and Sybok will eventually reappear in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. It is even possible that Sybok may play a role in suggesting to T'Pring how to end her engagement with Spock in Star Trek: The Original Series.
