Director Chad Stahelski has provided an update on the potential for a fifth installment of the John Wick franchise and its future with Keanu Reeves. Following the success of the previous three films, Reeves returned as the iconic assassin for the fourth movie earlier this year. The conclusion of John Wick: Chapter 4 appeared to bring an end to the character's journey, leaving fans unsure if the mainline series would continue. In a recent interview with Inverse, Stahelski clarified their approach to John Wick 5, stating that it is not completely ruled out. However, there are several factors that need to be considered before moving forward. See Stahelski's full comment below.
I have numerous notebooks filled with ideas for John Wick sequels, including John Wicks 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9. While we have plenty of ideas, we have yet to finalize the storyline. I have no desire to simply create another film for the sake of making money. Although I enjoy the character of John Wick, I would only consider making additional movies if we had a compelling story. We intentionally keep the possibility open-ended. The studio would love for us to announce another film, but Keanu and I prefer to take our time and determine if we have something worth watching. Additionally, we are fortunate to have a studio that is genuinely interested in exploring new directions rather than solely focusing on financial gain. They have been incredibly supportive as we consider branching out this year.
"We proposed the concept of 'spin-offs' or 'ancillaries' for the John Wick world. Keanu and I both expressed our ideas for exploring other characters in the franchise. The response from the team was very positive, as they expressed keen interest in delving into those possibilities. This would include characters who have not been featured in the previous films due to narrative constraints, as well as the exploration of new stories for existing characters."
