An Elite Lieutenant
Renji Returns – BLEACH Thousand-Year Blood War Part 2 Episode 5
Renji is undoubtedly a top contender for any open position among the Shinigami Captains in the Gotei 13. His Reiatsu, swordsmanship, strength, speed, and endurance far surpass those of his peers. And let's not forget about his immensely powerful Zanpakuto. Renji excels in all aspects of combat skills practiced by Shinigami, except for Kido, but he more than makes up for it when facing most opponents.
His Reiatsu levels were already impressive when he was first introduced, but they reached new heights when he achieved Bankai. Rukia Kuchiki even struggled to recognize his energy until he consciously lowered it. After consuming Kirio Hikifune's Reiatsu-infused food in the Soul King Palace, Renji's energy soared even higher. He was able to confront and overpower Mask de Masculine, a Sternritter who had previously defeated him.
More Than Just A Swordsman
Renji exhibits remarkable skill in the art of Shunpo, a movement technique that proves essential in compensating for the vulnerabilities exposed when he activates his Zanpakuto's whip-like Shikai. By harnessing this technique to enhance his speed, he effortlessly eludes potentially fatal attacks. Notably, his physical strength is formidable, enabling him to block formidable adversaries with his bare hands. Admirably, Renji's durability is commendable; he persists in battle even after enduring severe injuries, exemplified in his confrontation against Byakuya, where he valiantly continues to fight despite sustaining a direct hit from Byakuya's Bankai Senbonzakura Kageyoshi.Renji possesses a remarkable quality – his versatility with his Zanpakuto is unparalleled. Initially, his blade, Zabimaru, appears to be a conventional katana in its sealed state. However, upon entering its Shikai form, the Zanpakuto undergoes a remarkable transformation. It extends into a serrated blade comprising six segments, each adorned with jagged protrusions at their ends, resembling. The distinguishing feature of this blade lies in its astonishing ability to elongate nearly infinitely, connected by a stretchable thread. Consequently, Zabimaru can function more like a whip than a mere sword, yet Renji's expertise in swordsmanship enables him to wield it proficiently in either capacity.
Renji's ability to compensate for any distance between him and his opponent makes Zabimaru an ideal weapon for short to mid-range combat, catching his foes off guard. In his first fight against Ichigo, Renji demonstrated this by forcing him backwards with Zabimaru's segments. When Renji activates its Shikai, he commands it to "Howl." Renji himself acknowledges that Zabimaru is one of the most challenging Zanpakuto to master among the Lieutenants of the Gotei 13, adding testament to his remarkable skill in wielding the blade as an extension of his arm.
Additionally, Renji has the ability to disconnect all of Zabimaru's segments, causing them to levitate in the air for an all-out attack from all directions. However, this move comes with a significant drawback. Once used, Renji cannot reactivate his Shikai indefinitely, leaving him vulnerable to counterattacks. This technique should be reserved as a last resort when all other options have failed, as Renji will be unable to use his sword for a prolonged period after activating it.
Unleashing His True Power
Renji, one of the few Lieutenants in the Gotei 13 who has achieved Bankai, has demonstrated two variations of his Zanpakuto's ultimate release. Initially, he obtained an incomplete version called Hihio Zabimaru, after training with Ichigo in the Soul Society Arc. This Bankai expanded on his Shikai ability, creating a whip of larger scale made of skeletal fragments that ended in a snake-like skull. With this version, Renji could capture opponents, slam them into the ground, unleash bursts of energy from the skull, or use its mouth to inflict biting attacks. His Bankai manifested this way because his Zanpakuto did not acknowledge or recognize his strength.
Later, after his incomplete Bankai was stolen by the Wandenreich, Renji discovered the true name of his Bankai: Souou Zabimaru. He obtained this knowledge after undergoing training at the Soul King Palace. In its true form, Renji's Bankai is more compact, yet shares several similarities with its predecessor. He gains a cowl of green fur on his left shoulder that extends into a massive skeletal arm, which mimics Renji's movements to grab, crush, and throw opponents. Additionally, his other arm features a gauntlet adorned with a snake skull. The mouth of the snake skull holds a blade that Renji can extend at will. The power of Renji's true Bankai surpasses its earlier version, making him comparable to most Captain level Shinigami in the Gotei 13, with the exception of a few elite individuals.
