Highlights
Speed is a vital aspect of power scaling in Bleach, enabling Shinigami to outmaneuver opponents and execute attacks that catch enemies off guard.
Shunpo, also known as "Flash Step," is a crucial skill that amplifies the speed of a Shinigami, enabling them to swiftly move between different locations with minimal effort.
Among the top contenders for the title of fastest Shinigami are Yoruichi, Yamamoto, Ichibe, Kirio, Tenjiro, Aizen, and Ichigo. There are ongoing discussions and debates regarding who truly holds the crown due to their utilization of power-ups and transformative abilities.
Speed is crucial for Shinigami in Bleach, allowing them to quickly overcome opponents and gain an advantage over even the strongest foes. Many memorable displays of strength in the series involve characters catching their enemies off guard with unexpected attacks or techniques. These instances occur frequently throughout the Soul Society Arc, particularly in Ichigo's fights against Byakuya and many of Aizen's battles.
As the series progresses, the power scaling reaches unprecedented levels of speed. In the Thousand Year Blood War Arc, even more powerful characters are introduced, further pushing the limits of the main cast. This expands the number of individuals within the Gotei 13 and the Royal Guard who possess incredible speed. Speed plays a significant role in the power hierarchy of the series, leading to much debate over who can claim the title of the fastest Shinigami of all time. Several contenders have emerged who can realistically hold this claim. When discussing speed, it is specifically in reference to the pace at which a Shinigami can cover ground, regardless of the technique they use to achieve this speed.
What Techniques Can Boost Speed?
Shunpo, also known as "Flash Step," is a crucial technique for most Shinigami. It is a subset of the combat skill Hoho, which focuses on movement techniques and footwork. By utilizing their superhuman strength and physical conditioning, Shinigami can travel from one point to another in a minimal number of steps, surpassing the speed of sight. Skilled practitioners of Shunpo can outmaneuver their opponents and gain advantageous positions in combat, as well as travel long distances while remaining undetected.
Within the Gotei 13, the 2nd Division holds exceptional Shunpo users. This division is affiliated with the Onmitsukido, also known as the Stealth Force. The prowess of Shunpo practitioners is evident through notable individuals like Sui-Feng and her mentor, Yoruichi Shihoin, who both served as Captains of the 2nd Division. The importance placed on Shunpo is further highlighted by the fact that it plays a vital role in the Onmitsukido's covert operations. Operatives rely on Shunpo to swiftly break through enemy lines and evade detection. Additionally, mastering Shunpo to some extent is essential for all Shinigami, leading to numerous characters excelling in this art at varying levels.
The Main Contenders
In addition to Shunpo, Shinigami have various ways to enhance their speed. This can range from improving their physical abilities to utilizing power-ups and transformations. For example, when activating his older incomplete Bankai, Ichigo Kurosaki experienced a significant boost in speed. This form condensed his Reiatsu into a concentrated form, allowing him to unleash devastating bursts of power and move at speeds comparable to Byakuya Kuchiki. After training in the Dangai to learn the Final Getsuga Tensho, Ichigo's Bankai reached even greater speeds, surpassing even Aizen who had evolved beyond the limits of Hollows and Shinigami.
After conducting surveys among the majority of the Gotei 13 and the Royal Guard, a few exceptional individuals stand out due to their exceptional mastery of Shunpo and incredible speed. Notable figures who deserve recognition include Genryusai Shigekuni Yamamoto, Shunsui Kyoraku, Sosuke Aizen, Tenjiro Kirinji, Kirio Hikifune, Ichibe Hyosube, Kenpachi Zaraki, Yoruichi Shihoin, Sui-Feng, Kisuke Urahara, Byakuya Kuchiki, and finally, Ichigo Kurosaki himself. This esteemed list comprises some of the most formidable Shinigami in the history of Soul Society, each possessing immense power and unparalleled strength.
Most characters on this list primarily rely on Shunpo for their speed, except for Zaraki who compensates for his lack of skill in Shunpo with raw physical strength. Aizen and Ichigo are the only ones who use power ups to enhance their speed. Aizen's Hogyoku-induced evolutions boost his Reiatsu and raw physical strength, while Ichigo's earlier Hollow mask and Bankai provide him with a significant increase in speed, especially after his training in the Dangai during the Battle of Fake Karakura Town.
However, this doesn't mean that Aizen and Ichigo completely neglect the use of Shunpo in their fights. Instead, they utilize the heightened physical strength from these transformations to elevate their Shunpo to even greater speeds, despite not having the same mastery as characters like Yoruichi or Sui-Feng. This is particularly evident in Ichigo's case, as he only truly mastered Shunpo after training with the Royal Guard during the Quincy Blood War.
The Fastest Of Them All
Shunsui and Byakuya were easily surpassed in speed by Yamamoto and Yoruichi, respectively. Sui-Feng also fell behind Yoruichi and could not keep up with Tenjiro. Kisuke's fighting style doesn't heavily rely on speed, so he was outmatched by Aizen. Zaraki only started learning Shunpo during the Quincy Blood War, and while he is fast, it is not the foundation of his combat style.
Yoruichi, Yamamoto, Ichibe, Kirio, and Tenjiro are all on similar levels, with Yoruichi's mastery of Shunpo giving her a slight advantage in speed, closely followed by Tenjiro. However, Ichibe and Yamamoto surpass her in other aspects, making them overall more powerful. Comparing their speeds beyond this is difficult since direct confrontations between them are rare, making it impossible to accurately measure their relative speeds.
Therefore, only Aizen and Ichigo remain as contenders for the title of the fastest Shinigami. Their impressive feats in the climactic battle in Fake Karakura Town and their confrontations against Yhwach in the Quincy Blood War validate this claim. After undergoing intense training in the Dangai, Ichigo's speed surpassed that of Aizen, who, despite evolving with the help of the Hogyoku, couldn't even keep up with Ichigo's attacks. However, it is rumored that Aizen became even stronger during his imprisonment, surpassing even his Hogyoku forms. It becomes challenging to compare Ichigo's speed after his Dangai training with his abilities after his time at the Soul King Palace. Hence, it is difficult to determine who is the faster of the two, and both Aizen and Ichigo could rightfully claim the title of the fastest Shinigami in history.
