Resident Evil, the famous survival horror game series, has been giving players nightmares for decades with its horrifying creatures and intense encounters. Whether it's the relentless Nemesis or the creepy Regenerators, the series is well-known for its ability to terrify.
However, not every monster in the Resident Evil universe manages to instill fear in us. In fact, there are some creatures that have unintentionally become known as the least scary beings in the franchise's history. These not-so-scary monsters offer an interesting look at the lighter side of Resident Evil's creature design. Get ready for some laughs and a break from the bone-chilling horror!
10 Bandersnatch - Resident Evil: Code Veronica (2000)
In the eerie world of Resident Evil: Code Veronica, a peculiar creature called the Bandersnatch emerges, displaying a perplexing presence. Its most distinctive feature is a single gigantic arm, unnaturally elongated and out of place, paired with a face that possesses an unconventional appeal, one that only a caring mother could find endearing.
However, the Bandersnatch fails to instill fear in its viewers. Instead, its appearance may even lead one to question if they have unexpectedly encountered a rejected character from a children's show rather than a formidable monster. Perhaps the Bandersnatch would have achieved greater success in the realm of slapstick comedy, where its unique characteristics would have been celebrated rather than feared.
9 Drain Deimos - Resident Evil 3 (1999)
Resident Evil 3 introduces the bizarre Drain Deimos, a group of creatures who make quite an unconventional impression. When they approach, they engage in a peculiar jiggle dance that seems like an attempt to show off their questionable dance moves.
Their appearance only adds to the challenge of taking them seriously, as they are a chaotic combination of a hunter, a spider, and a licker. These Drain Deimos can be compared to cheap imitation action figures found in bargain stores, desperately trying to mimic the real thing but falling short in every way. Encountering these ridiculous creatures is hard not to find amusing, as they fail to instill fear and instead elicit laughter with their unintentional comedic behavior.
8 El Gigante - Resident Evil 4 (2005)
In the world of Resident Evil 4, players come face to face with the towering monstrosity known as El Gigante. However, despite its imposing size, this colossal creature fails to inspire genuine fear. Its design comes across as disappointingly generic, lacking any standout or distinguishing features.
It almost feels as though the developers took inspiration from Tolkien's renowned cave trolls in The Lord of the Rings and created a lackluster imitation. While El Gigante may match up in terms of size, it simply cannot compare to the originality and depth found in Middle-earth. When it comes to memorable and terrifying monsters, this giant beast falls short, leaving us longing for more imaginative and distinct adversaries within the Resident Evil universe.
7 Albinoid - Resident Evil: Code Veronica (2000)
Resident Evil: Code Veronica introduces gamers to the Albinoids, a lackluster entity that fails to evoke fear. Instead of instilling terror, these creatures raise doubts about their purpose and design.
With their sleek and suggestive appearance, they unintentionally resemble a poorly executed designer adult toy rather than a menacing creature. It becomes challenging to view them as formidable adversaries, as their presence is more likely to elicit puzzled expressions rather than screams of fright. Perhaps the Albinoids would have been better suited for a game catering to a different audience and tone.
6 Molded - Resident Evil 7 (2017)
In Resident Evil 7, the introduction of the Molded failed to evoke the same level of dread and horror as the traditional zombies. These creatures can be seen as a mediocre replication of their undead counterparts. Instead of the decaying and grotesque appearance that makes zombies genuinely terrifying, the Molded appear as lifeless shells without the same impact.
Their design lacks the disturbing and unsettling attributes that are typically associated with the horror aspect of Resident Evil. In a game celebrated for its assortment of terrifying creatures, the Molded fall short in creating a lasting impression, ultimately paling in comparison to more memorable and fearsome adversaries.
5 Glimmer - Resident Evil: Dead Aim (2003)
Resident Evil: Dead Aim, often overlooked, introduces the lackluster Glimmers. These creatures, resembling frogs with cranberry-filled heads, emit a strangely comical aura that makes them more comical than fearsome.
Their design aims to invoke amusement rather than terror, preventing them from being taken seriously as formidable enemies. Rather than instilling a feeling of imminent danger, the Glimmers are more likely to incite a desire for a fruity treat. In the extensive array of terrifying creatures in the Resident Evil universe, the Glimmers fail to make a lasting impact and fade into obscurity as forgettable adversaries.
4 Mimicry Marcus - Resident Evil 0 (2002)
Mimicry Marcus in Resident Evil 0 initially appeared to be a promising concept—a human-like mass of leeches that should be terrifying. However, the execution of these creatures disappointingly falls flat. Instead of striking fear, they become a mere annoyance, a nuisance to deal with.
They almost feel like an early version of the Molded from Resident Evil 7, but somehow even less frightening. Unfortunately, Mimicry Marcus fails to deliver genuine scariness. Their lackluster presence serves as a reminder that not every concept successfully translates into fear-inducing creatures in the expansive world of Resident Evil.
3 Infected Moth - Resident Evil: Code Veronica (2000)
In Resident Evil: Code Veronica, the Infected Moths are more of an annoyance than a terrifying threat. They earn the title of being the most irritating creatures in the entire series, constantly bothering and poisoning players with their winged nuisance. These oversized insects test gamers' patience rather than inspire fear. Moths themselves are not inherently scary, and these enlarged versions fail to change that perception.
Instead of inducing terror, they become a nuisance with their continuous egg-laying and tendency to spread toxins. It's hard to feel frightened when the main goal is simply to locate a giant fly swatter to eliminate their bothersome presence.
2 Under Taker - Resident Evil Survivor (2000)
The Under Takers, introduced in the original spinoff Resident Evil Survivor, disappoint in terms of their ability to invoke fear. Their unnaturally proportioned limbs, reminiscent of a child's drawings come to life, fail to elicit genuine terror. Equipped with guns, they seem out of place in a series known for its spine-chilling monsters and otherworldly abominations. It's almost as if they stumbled onto the wrong stage and mistakenly ended up in a Resident Evil game. The Under Takers are unable to establish a distinctive presence and pale in comparison to the horrifying creatures that populate the franchise's memorable encounters.
1 Hunter Type "γ" - Resident Evil 3 (1999)
The introduction of the Hunter Type "γ" in Resident Evil 3 leaves fans underwhelmed, as the creature's adorable appearance and lack of threat fail to inspire fear. This unintentionally undermines the game's intended sense of terror, causing players to chuckle rather than cower.
