Known for its groundbreaking cel-shaded art style and seamless four-player co-op, the Borderlands franchise is famous for its extensive roster of eccentric and larger-than-life characters. Over the past 14 years, the franchise has introduced a multitude of colorful and memorable characters to players' screens. Each fan is bound to have their personal favorite, but there are several characters who leave a lasting impression long after the game is turned off.

Among the most iconic Borderlands characters are those that are fully playable. In the original Borderlands game, players could choose from a cast of four characters. Although these characters did not fully embrace the series' eccentric tone, they have become beloved figures within the franchise. They have made appearances in subsequent sequels, spinoffs, and DLCs. However, there are a few characters who have yet to make their triumphant return to the spotlight.

Classic Borderlands Characters That Still Don't Have a DLC

When it comes to defining "classic" Borderlands characters, it encompasses any highly memorable character from the first game in the series. Even after 11 years, characters like Handsome Jack from Borderlands 2 are still considered iconic. It is also fair to say that the main playable cast of the first two Borderlands games consists of the most recognizable characters, with only a few of them having their own dedicated DLC.

One such character is Lilith, the original Siren class character from Borderlands. In Borderlands 2, she received her own DLC titled "Commander Lilith and the Fight for Sanctuary." This DLC, which came out seven years after the game's initial release, is the fifth campaign DLC for Borderlands 2 and is exclusively available for the next-generation ports of the game. In this DLC, players join forces with Lilith and the Crimson Raiders to defend their home base, Sanctuary, against Colonel Hector, a former Dahl military leader.

Krieg, a DLC character from Borderlands 2, is another fortunate character to have his own dedicated DLC. Borderlands 3's DLC titled "Psycho Krieg and the Fantastic Fustercluck" takes players into the twisted mind of this infamous Psycho.

In addition to the playable characters, many other beloved Borderlands characters have made a return in their own downloadable content (DLC) throughout the years. Among them, Mad Moxxi stands out as the most prolific, having appeared in a total of three DLCs over the past 14 years. The first DLC, called Mad Moxxi's Underdome Riot, was released alongside the original Borderlands game. Tiny Tina also had her own DLC called Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep, a short campaign that later served as inspiration for the creation of Tiny Tina's Wonderlands. Even Claptrap has been featured in several DLCs over the years.

However, there are still a number of classic Borderlands characters who have yet to receive their own DLC, and some of them have not been seen since their initial appearances. While characters like Mordecai, Roland, and Brick have made appearances in subsequent Borderlands sequels and spinoffs, they have not been given their own DLC campaigns. Similarly, Zer0 and Maya from Borderlands 2 made appearances in Borderlands 3, but they did not have the opportunity to shine in their own DLC adventures.

Content: However, even more concerning are Salvador and Axton, iconic characters from Borderlands 2 who not only lack their own downloadable content (DLC), but have also been absent from the game since their initial introduction, apart from occasional radio remarks in the Arms Race missions. While reintroducing these characters may pose challenges considering the unresolved aspects of their storylines, the Borderlands franchise is far from its conclusion, leaving ample room for these beloved characters to receive another opportunity in the limelight.
