These places, Madrid's artsy quarter, Melbourne's sustainable pocket, and Medellin's up-and-coming zone, share a common factor - they are recognized as some of the world's coolest neighborhoods by global publisher Time Out.
Each year, Time Out surveys its employees and contributors worldwide to curate a compilation of the top 40 vibrant, captivating, and trendy neighborhoods.
Claiming the 2023 first position is Laureles, situated in the bustling city of Medellin in Colombia. This hometown is renowned for its association with musicians J Balvin and Karol G.
The neighborhood of Smithfield in Dublin, Ireland, was the highest-ranked spot in Europe.
Cillian Doyle, from Light House Cinema, states that Laureles has a "relaxed reputation," as mentioned by Time Out. This is quite surprising considering it is home to the Estadio Atanasio Girardot soccer stadium and the renowned nightlife street, La 70.
Despite the gentrification that has occurred in other neighborhoods in Medellin, Laureles has managed to resist these changes. Time Outs Luis Gomez has observed that traditional fruit vendors can still be seen pushing their carts through the streets of Laureles.
Out of the top 10 coolest neighborhoods, five are located in Europe. The list includes Copenhagen's waterfront neighborhood, Havnen, and the historic Smithfield section of Dublin, both appearing for the first time. In Asia, Hong Kong's vibrant Sheung Wan neighborhood is recognized, while the best neighborhood in the US is Mid-City in New Orleans, known for its exceptional food scene.
Isola, which means island in Italian, is the coolest neighborhood in Milan.
