Tim Burton's Wednesday introduces new actors who will portray the iconic characters of the Addams Family, along with a mix of familiar faces and fresh talent depicting the "outcasts" and "normies" at Nevermore Academy. This Netflix series follows Wednesday Addams as she enrolls in Nevermore Academy, a school for social misfits located in the town of Jericho. Within this supernatural environment, the outcast students often clash with the local "normies" (humans who lack supernatural abilities). The tension escalates when a series of brutal murders haunts Jericho. As Wednesday adjusts to her new school and harnesses her psychic powers, she delves into a murder mystery connected to her parents three decades ago.
As the title implies, Netflix's series primarily focuses on Wednesday, with her family members Gomez, Morticia, Pugsley, and Fester Addams playing less prominent roles. In addition to a diverse array of accomplished and up-and-coming actors in the cast, the supernatural adaptation of the Addams Family franchise features the return of Christina Ricci, the beloved actress who previously portrayed the iconic Wednesday Addams in the 1990s film series. However, Ricci takes on a new character in this Tim Burton-directed series. Here, we provide a breakdown of the cast and characters in Wednesday, including Jenna Ortega, who portrays the adored teenage Wednesday Addams.
Jenna Ortega As Wednesday Addams
Jenna Ortega, renowned for her terrifying performances, takes on the chilling role of Wednesday Addams in Netflix's Wednesday cast. Wednesday, the iconic character, is the darkly humorous daughter of Morticia and Gomez Addams. Due to her murderous intentions towards students at her previous high school, she is sent to the exclusive outcast school, Nevermore Academy. Throughout her time there, Wednesday must learn to harness her psychic abilities while uncovering a 25-year-old murder mystery. Additionally, Ortega portrays Goody Addams, Wednesday's ancestor from the 17th century.
Recognized as a scream queen, Jenna Ortega has made a name for herself through various roles, including Scream (2022), X, The Fallout, You, Stuck in the Middle, and Jane the Virgin. Ortega has also secured a role in the highly anticipated Beetlejuice 2, a Tim Burton reboot, where she portrays Lydia's (Winona Ryder) daughter. Furthermore, Ortega will return for Wednesday season 2, taking on the role of producer and providing valuable insights for the future of the series.
Emma Myers As Enid Sinclair
Enid, a lively and vibrant werewolf, is Wednesday's roommate at Nevermore Academy. Despite being ostracized by her family for her inability to transform into a wolf, Enid develops an unexpected friendship with Wednesday over the course of the semester. In the series, Enid is the second most important character after Ortega and undergoes the most significant transformation.
Before joining the Wednesday cast, Myers had roles in The Baker and the Beauty and Girl in the Basement. Myers has also been cast as the lead in the young adult mystery movie, A Good Girl's Guide to Murder, based on Holly Jackson's trilogy book series. It is likely that Myers will return for season 2 of Wednesday, although Jenna Ortega mentioned that romantic relationships are unlikely to develop between Wednesday and Enid.
Percy Hynes White As Xavier Thorpe
Xavier, a mysterious student at Nevermore Academy, possesses the incredible ability to bring his drawings to life. He develops a fondness for Wednesday and carries the burden of his father Vincent Thorpe's reputation as a famous psychic, who shows little interest in him. Xavier was previously roommates with Rowan and had a romantic relationship with Bianca, the school's most popular girl, making him a suspect in the murder case.
White has also appeared in Edge of Winter, A Christmas Horror Story, Between, and The Gifted. It is uncertain whether he will return for the second season of Wednesday. However, considering Jenna Ortega's statement that there won't be any romance in the new season, if White does make a comeback, it will likely be for non-romantic storylines.
Hunter Doohan As Tyler Galpin
Tyler, the son of Jericho's Sheriff Galpin in the Wednesday cast, is portrayed as a typical teenager. He works at the local coffee shop called Weathervane Cafe, where he develops a strong bond with Wednesday Addams. Unfortunately, he also serves as the secondary antagonist and the serial killer whom Wednesday is in pursuit of, ultimately causing their romance to fall apart. However, it's worth noting that Jenna Ortega, the actress who plays Wednesday, expressed her dislike for the love triangle involving these characters, indicating that it is unlikely to occur in future seasons.
Doohan has portrayed notable roles such as Teenage Warren in Truth Be Told and Adam Desiato in Your Honor. As Tyler doesn't meet his demise and is instead arrested and sent to a Psychiatric Hospital for treatment, there remains the possibility of him returning as the main villain in season 2 of Wednesday, seeking revenge.
Gwendoline Christie As Principal Larissa Weems
Gwendoline Christie, known for her Emmy-nominated role as Brienne of Tarth in Game of Thrones, portrays Principal Larissa Weems at Nevermore Academy in the Wednesday cast. Principal Weems harbors a deep disdain for the Addams family due to a past incident. Specifically, she was once roommates with Morticia Addams during their time as students at Nevermore Academy, and even after 30 years, she still holds a grudge against Morticia.
Aside from her impressive portrayal of Brienne of Tarth, Christie has also graced the screen as Lucifer in Netflix's The Sandman and as Captain Phasma in the Star Wars sequel movies. Although her character met an unfortunate fate in the first season of Wednesday, it is unlikely that Christie will return. However, Ortega, the show's creator, has expressed her desire to bring Christie back if given the opportunity.
Christina Ricci As Marilyn Thornhill
Marilyn Thornhill oversees Ophelia Hall, the living quarters of Wednesday and Enid, at Nevermore Academy. As the sole non-supernatural staff member, she teaches botany as well. This marked a significant moment for the Wednesday cast, as Christina Ricci, renowned for her unforgettable portrayal of Wednesday Addams in the Addams Family films of 1991 and 1993, has passed on the gothic role to Jenna Ortega. It was also intriguing to witness the original Wednesday character assume the role of a villain in the Netflix series.
Ricci's acting credits extend to notable projects such as Now and Then, Casper, Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow, and The Matrix Resurrections. Moreover, she currently holds a prominent role in the Showtime series Yellowjackets, playing Misty Quigley. The fate of her character in the first season of Wednesday remains undisclosed, leaving room for the possibility of Ricci's return to the Wednesday cast in the future.
Jamie McShane As Sheriff Donovan Galpin
Jamie McShane takes on the role of Donovan Galpin, the sheriff in Jericho, who is both Tyler's father and a normie in the Wednesday cast. Sheriff Galpin quickly finds himself at odds with Wednesday Addams as she gets involved in a supernatural murder investigation while spending more and more time with his son. McShane is well-known for his performances in Bloodline, Gone Girl, Argo, Sons of Anarchy, and The Lincoln Lawyer. If the second season of Nevermore Academy returns, there is a high chance that he will reprise his role as Sheriff Galpin in the Wednesday cast.
Catherine Zeta-Jones As Morticia Addams
Morticia Addams, the gothic wife of Gomez Addams and mother to Wednesday and Pugsley in the Wednesday cast, is also known for her psychic abilities. Thirty years ago, Morticia attended Nevermore Academy, where she now lives in the shadow of her daughter. Catherine Zeta-Jones, an Academy Award-winner, has gained recognition for her exceptional performances in movies such as Chicago, The Mask of Zorro, Traffic, Ocean’s Twelve, The Terminal, and Entrapment. It is highly likely that Zeta-Jones will make an appearance as a Wednesday character, even if it's just a brief role.
Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams
Luis Guzmán portrays Gomez Addams, Wednesday's father, who was accused of murdering a Jericho normie three decades ago. As a result, among all the characters in Wednesday, he is the one who has caused the most difficulties for his daughter at her new school. Guzmán is widely recognized for his performances in acclaimed films such as Boogie Nights, Punch-Drunk Love, Traffic, Narcos, and Oz. Additionally, he made a brief appearance in Rian Johnson's Poker Face and will be seen in the upcoming action-thriller Havoc, directed by Gareth Evans and set to release in 2023. It is expected that Guzmán will return in a minor role for the cast of Wednesday season 2.
Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley Addams
Pugsley Addams, the younger brother of Wednesday, is a victim of bullying. Although he made an appearance as a minor character in the first season, portrayed by Isaac Ordonez, his role was insignificant and had little impact on the overall story. Ordonez has also acted in movies such as A Wrinkle in Time and 7th & Union. It remains uncertain whether he will be part of the cast in the second season of the series.
Victor Dorobantu as Thing
Thing, a unique member of the Addams family, serves as a living hand and remains by Wednesday's side at Nevermore. Remarkably, this marks Victor Dorobantu's debut in the world of acting, as his hand was utilized in the portrayal, aided by the disappearance of the actor through the implementation of CGI blue screen technology. Renowned predominantly as a skilled magician and illusionist, Thing is anticipated to return as a recurring character in season 2, faithfully serving as one of Wednesday's most trusted companions.
Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester Addams
Playing the role of Uncle Fester in the Wednesday cast is Fred Armisen. He portrays Wednesday's criminal uncle, who pays a visit to Nevermore Academy while on the run. Armisen's performances were captivating, stealing the spotlight whenever he appeared on screen. There have been whispers of a potential spinoff series featuring his character, which is highly anticipated and promises to be thoroughly entertaining. Armisen is widely recognized for his time as a cast member on Saturday Night Live, as well as his notable roles in Big Mouth, Portlandia, Los Espookys, and Moonbase 8. Additionally, in 2023, he lent his voice to the character Cranky Kong in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
George Burcea as Lurch
George Burcea, known as Lurch, serves as the devoted and towering butler of the Addams family. Throughout the Wednesday series, his sole responsibility is chauffeuring her to Nevermore Academy and back home. With notable appearances in projects such as Dampyr and Comrade Detective, this Romanian actor should make a comeback as a Wednesday character in future seasons, if only to bring the series full circle.
Riki Lindhome as Dr. Valerie Kinbott
Riki Lindhome portrays Dr. Valerie Kinbott, the local psychiatrist in Jericho who becomes Wednesday Addams' patient in the Wednesday cast. Alongside her work as part of the comedy folk duo Garfunkel and Oates, Lindhome has showcased her talent in various films like Knives Out, Much Ado About Nothing, and Another Period. She has also lent her voice to multiple animated series set to premiere in 2023, including Monster High, Animaniacs, and The Muppets Mayhem. Unfortunately, due to Valerie's demise in season 1, Lindhome is unlikely to reprise her role as a Wednesday character in the future.
Joy Sunday as Bianca Barclay
Moosa Mostafa as Eugene
Joy Sunday portrays Bianca Barclay in the Wednesday cast of the show. She is considered the dominant figure at Nevermore Academy, being a popular siren who recently went through a breakup with Xavier. Despite their initial animosity, Sunday and Wednesday eventually worked together, burying their animosity. In addition to her role in Wednesday, Sunday is recognized for her appearances in Bad Hair, Dear White People, and the upcoming 2022 film, Dog, which features Channing Tatum. As Bianca survived, there remains the possibility of Sunday reprising her role as the character in future episodes.
Playing the character of Eugene in the TV show Wednesday, Moosa Mostafa portrays the role of Eugene, Wednesday's friend, and the leader of the school's beekeeping club. Despite being one of the youngest students, Mostafa's character goes through significant growth throughout the first season, ultimately standing up and joining the fight against Marilyn Thornhill. However, it is Eugene who ultimately comes to Wednesday's rescue by using his control over a swarm of bees. Apart from his role in Wednesday, Mostafa has also acted in Nativity Rocks! and The Last Bus. It is currently unknown if he will be returning for the second season of Wednesday.
Georgie Farmer as Ajax
Tommie Earl Jenkins as Mayor Walker
Georgie Farmer portrays Ajax, a member of the Nightshades in the Tim Burton-directed Addams Family series. Ajax is a gorgon and happens to be the object of Enid's affection. Despite being shy and socially awkward, Ajax was there to provide solace for Enid when she transformed into a werewolf for the very first time. In addition to his role as Ajax, Farmer has also appeared as Jake in Evermoor and as Gabriel Becker in Treadstone. It is anticipated that Farmer will reprise his role as Ajax alongside Emma Myers, who portrays Enid, in the second season of Wednesday.
Mayor Noble Walker in the Wednesday cast is portrayed by Tommie Earl Jenkins, who previously played the role of the sheriff during Morticia and Gomez's time at Nevermore. During that time, Gomez was suspected of causing someone's death, and Jenkins always supported the "outcasts" and would dishonestly defend them and their town against outsiders. Jenkins has also appeared in other projects such as Go Jetters, Pandora, and Paradise Highway. In 2024, he will be seen in Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Two. However, Marilyn killed his character in the first season, so he will not make a return in future seasons as a Wednesday character.
Iman Marson as Lucas Walker
Iman Marson, aka Lucas Walker, the son of the mayor, becomes entangled in a conflict with Wednesday. Residing in close proximity to Nevermore, he earns his livelihood at Pilgrim's World. Nonetheless, he manages to bridge the gap between himself and Wednesday, providing her with the crucial evidence necessary to unveil the identity of the killer. Prior to his appearance in Netflix's Wednesday, Marson had featured in the short film Split Sole. Given his father's demise and his status as a "normie," it seems highly improbable that he will make a comeback to the Wednesday cast in the foreseeable future.
Calum Ross as Rowan
Rowan, a telekinetic student at Nevermore, is an even greater outcast than Wednesday. Possessing the power of telekinesis, he was once a member of the Nightshade Society. Convinced that eliminating Wednesday was his ultimate destiny, Rowan attempted to do so twice, but his plans were thwarted when The Hyde intervened, ultimately causing his demise. Ross, in his first prominent acting role, featured on Netflix's Wednesday series. With his untimely demise, his time with the Wednesday cast came to an end.
William Houston as Joseph Crackstone
William Houston portrays Joseph Crackstone, the main antagonist in the Wednesday cast. As the founder of Jericho, his mission was to eliminate society's outcasts, which Marilyn was attempting to bring back to complete. Ultimately, Wednesday defeats Crackstone by impaling him in the heart, resulting in his irreversible demise. Apart from his remarkable portrayal in this role, Houston has also made notable appearances in Sherlock Holmes, The Last Duel, The Salisbury Poisonings, and Dracula Untold.
