How to Change the Default Name in Baldur's Gate 3

Baldur's Gate 3 is a fantasy come true for Dungeons & Dragons enthusiasts. Players have the option to either step into the shoes of pre-designed characters with rich backgrounds and individual motivations, or create a character from scratch to embark on a unique journey. While the customization options for character creation like models and voices may have some limitations, players have a wide array of classes, races, and personalities to select from, allowing them to shape a distinctive protagonist. Moreover, players can assign a personalized name to their character, although this feature can be easily overlooked due to the game's default name for custom protagonists. Regrettably, once the adventure in Baldur's Gate 3 commences, there is no way to modify the character's name, making it crucial to understand how to change the name before embarking on a new game.

Players have the option to embark on their Baldur's Gate 3 journey in two ways. One way is with premade origin characters that are intricately woven into the game's narrative, similar to the approach taken in Divinity: Original Sin 2. Alternatively, players can choose to begin their adventure with a customized protagonist, allowing them to tailor their character's appearance and class according to their preferences. At the game's main menu, select New Game, and enjoy the cutscenes.

After the FMV has finished, players will be taken to the character creation screen.

In Baldur's Gate 3, players have the option to select from seven origin characters or create their own unique protagonist by choosing the Custom option. However, only the Dark Urge preset character allows players to modify the name.

With the use of a keyboard and mouse, players can customize various aspects of their character such as race, sub-race, gender, appearance, class, background, and abilities.

Once the customization has been finished, click Proceed, and the player can change their name. The default name is Tav.

Change a Character's Name Using a Controller

To change their name, players should press the Y button on an Xbox Controller or Steam Deck, or the Triangle button on a PlayStation controller, while in the creation menu. This will allow them to select "Review Character" and proceed with updating their name.
