After successfully overcoming the challenges posed by either Godrick the Grafted or finding a way around Stormveil Castle, players will arrive at the Liurnia of the Lakes region in Elden Ring. This expansive area, marked by its numerous lakes and water bodies, is significantly larger than Limgrave on the map. Additionally, it is in this region that the Tarnished will stumble upon renowned landmarks from the history of the Lands Between, including the Raya Lucaria Academy, The Moonlight Altar, and the Caria Manor.
Similar to other areas in Elden Ring, Liurnia of the Lakes is home to a variety of bosses, both mandatory and optional. It is important to note that the enemies here primarily rely on magic, being affiliated with the academy. Therefore, encounters with them will require a distinct approach. With this in mind, let us now delve into the details of each boss found within this region, regardless of their size.
Content
As of July 17th, 2023, Jacob Buchalter has provided an update on the Liurnia region in Elden Ring. This particular area may appear to be mainly swamps and water-bogged locations at first glance, but upon further exploration, players will discover numerous diverse areas and well-placed locations throughout the map.
During their initial playthrough, players would not expect to find the Glintstone Sorcerer HQ of the Lands Between, multiple Erdtree Avatars, various Catacombs, renowned criminals imprisoned within Evergaols, and even the Moonlight Altar area near the end of Ranni's questline within the Liurnia of the Lakes region. Therefore, let's delve into each boss encountered in this region, analyze their respective locations, and discuss the rewards they offer upon defeat.
Liurnia Of The Lakes Region Categories
The Liurnia of the Lakes can be subdivided into three sections based on the Map Fragments discovered beneath the spire statues in Elden Ring. These sections include East Liurnia, West Liurnia, and North Liurnia. Each region showcases its distinct aesthetic themes, which are manifested in the landscapes, foes, stories, enchantments, and particularly the formidable bosses found within these areas.
Cleanrot Knight
Name | Location Found | Rewards Dropped |
---|---|---|
Cleanrot Knight | Stillwater Cave | 3,300 Runes, Winged Sword Insignia Talisman, and Cleanrot Knight's Sword |
In Elden Ring, the Cleanrot Knight serves as a prime illustration of a common tactic utilized in the game. This tactic involves introducing formidable adversaries as bosses, with the intention of familiarizing players with challenging combat encounters and providing a glimpse of what lies ahead if they follow the game's standard progression. Situated in Stillwater Cave, northwest of Stormveil Castle, the boss represents a striking variation of one of Malenia's esteemed royal knights.
The cave lies just beyond the castle's exit, slightly past the broken bridge that descends towards the watery lake, but more towards the east. Beware of Spirit Jellyfish, as their presence indicates that the Tarnished is nearby.
Venture through the Cave inhabited by Bats, Miranda Sprouts, and Rot Servants, until you reach the final encounter with the Cleanrot Knight. This foe may pose a challenge in the early stages of the game, but becomes more manageable once players become fully accustomed to Elden Ring's combat mechanics.
Erdtree Burial Watchdog
Name | Location Found | Rewards Dropped |
---|---|---|
Erdtree Burial Watchdog | Cliffbottom Catacombs | 3,200 Runes and the Kaiden Sellsword Spirit Ashes |
In Elden Ring's Lands Between, specifically in Liurnia of the Lakes, one can encounter Erdtree Burial Watchdogs. These formidable creatures are scattered throughout various regions and showcase diverse characteristics and abilities based on their respective locations. The particular Watchdog inhabiting this area possesses three heads and employs a staff for the purpose of spellcasting.
This Erdtree Burial Watchdog is located in the Cliffbottom Catacombs, which are situated to the east of the Purified Ruins. It is a place teeming with the typical Imps, as well as a significant number of Omens who can pose quite a challenge. Fortunately, this particular variant of the Burial Watchdog isn't too different from the standard one, but be cautious of its utilization of Glintstone Sorceries during the midst of the battle.
Lookout Tower & Bellum Church Night's Calvary
Name | Location Found | Rewards Dropped |
---|---|---|
Night's Calvary | North of Highway Lookout Tower | 5,600 Runes and Ice Spear Ash of War |
Night's Calvary | South of Bellum Church | 5,600 Runes, Giant Hunt Ash of War, and Nightrider Glaive |
In Liurnia of the Lakes, there are two Night's Cavalry, a recurring boss type, that only appear at night. One is located north of the Highway Lookout Tower, and the other can be found south of the Bellum Church Site of Grace.
Throughout the game, there are a total of 9 Night's Cavalry to be discovered. The recommended approach to fighting them remains consistent as they are all mounted on horses. Players can either attempt to exchange blows once or twice before disengaging while riding Torrent, or they can wait on the ground for a powerful strike as the cavalry rides by and take advantage of the stagger to land additional hits.
Tibia Mariner
Name | Location Found | Rewards Dropped |
---|---|---|
Tibia Mariner | Artist's Shack Area | 4,700 Runes,1x Deathroot, and Skeletal Bandit Spirit Ashes |
Similar to the Erdtree Burial Watchdogs or Night's Calvary, the Tibia Mariners can be encountered in diverse areas within the Lands Between. Belonging to the faction known as Those Who Live in Death, these skeletal companions frequently conjure various forms of undead during their boss battles.
The one in Liurnia can be somewhat challenging to locate, but it is situated precisely amidst the Artist's Shack and Liurnia Highway North Site of Grace. Specifically, it can be found in a small pond within a clearing of trees.
Church Of Vows Bell Bearing Hunter
Name | Location Found | Rewards Dropped |
---|---|---|
Bell Bearing Hunter | Church of Vows | 6,000 Runes and Meat Peddler's Bell Bearing |
The Bell Bearing Hunters, similar to the Deathbirds and Night's Calvary, exclusively emerge during nighttime. Defeating each one of them will reward players with a unique Bell Bearing Key Item, which they likely obtained by looting a slain merchant. In the region of Liurnia of the Lakes, players may encounter a hunter who invades the Church of Vows during the late hours.
The Bell Bearing Hunters rank among the game's most formidable bosses, featuring intriguing arenas, especially when including the Elemer of the Briars. However, it is regrettable that they play a relatively minor role in the overall narrative of Elden Ring.
Scenic Isle Deathbird
Name | Location Found | Rewards Dropped |
---|---|---|
Deathbird | Scenic Isle | 6,600 Runes and Red-Feathered Branchsword Talisman |
Another field boss that players will encounter on multiple occasions is the Deathbird. Similar to the Night's Calvary, these formidable creatures only appear during the night. However, players will be relieved to know that there are various types of these terrifying creatures, each employing distinct spells and wielding different weapons. This particular Deathbird can be found on Scenic Isle, a small landmass located just south of the Boilprawn Shack Site of Grace.
Gate Town North Death Rite Bird
Name | Location Found | Rewards Dropped |
---|---|---|
Death Rite Bird | South of Gathe Town North Site of Grace | 7,800 Runes and Ancient Death Rancor Sorcery |
The Death Rite Birds differ slightly from the standard Deathbirds, presenting a heightened upgrade. These creatures possess a greater array of attacks, employing ghost flame, characterized by its chilling nature that typically induces Frostbite. Initially encountered by the Tarnished, the first Death Rite Bird can be found a short distance to the south of the Gate Town North Site of Grace, exclusively during nighttime for those daring enough to engage in combat.
Walking Mausoleum & Converted Tower Erdtree Avatars
Name | Location Found | Rewards Dropped |
---|---|---|
Erdtree Avatar | At the Minor Erdtree near Liurnia's Walking Mausoleum | 5,800 Runes, Holy-Shrouding Cracked Tear, Lightning-Shrouding Cracked Tear, and Magic-Shrouding Cracked Tear |
Erdtree Avatar | North of the Converted Tower Site of Grace | 5,800 Runes, Cerulean Crystal Tear, and Ruptured Crystal Tear |
Within the Liurnia of the Lakes, there exist two Erdtree Avatars. In case you need a refresher, these avatars resemble the formidable Asylum Demon from the Dark Souls universe and serve as strong protectors of the numerous Minor Erdtrees scattered across the game. Defeating each avatar guarantees the acquisition of at least one Crystal Tear, a valuable resource used in the creation of the Flask of Wonderous Physick.
As for the two in Liurnia, the first one can be found in northeast Liurnia, adjacent to the Walking Mausoleum. To reach it, ascend the cliff located to the north of the Mausoleum and then follow the path leading to the nearby Minor Erdtree. The second Erdtree Avatar is situated at the end of the pathway just north of the Converted Tower Site of Grace.
Black Knife Assassin & Cemetery Shade
Name | Location Found | Rewards Dropped |
---|---|---|
Black Knife Assassin | Black Knife Catacombs | 1,600 Runes, Assassin's Cerulean Dagger, and the Black Knifeprint Key |
Cemetary Shade | Black Knife Catacombs | 3,500 Runes and Twinsage Sorcerer Spirit Ashes |
The Black Knife Catacombs, located in Elden Ring, stand out as a rare underground setting housing two distinct boss battles. The central boss of this Catacomb is the Cemetary Shade, accompanied by an optional boss, the Black Knife Assassin, concealed along a secret passageway.
While both bosses may be familiar to players from their encounters in Limgrave, they present subtle variations in this new setting. The Black Knife Assassin awaits in a confined space, unlike the expansive Limgrave Evergaol, while the Cemetary Shade now fights alongside skeletal allies instead of facing the challenge alone. However, players should not find either boss excessively difficult.
Ringblade, Spear, & Staff Crystalians
Name | Location Found | Rewards Dropped |
---|---|---|
Ringblade Crystalian | Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel | 3,000 Runes and Smithing-Stone Miner's Bell Bearing 1 |
Spear Crystalian & Staff Crystalian | Academy Crystal Cave | 3,300 Runes and Crystal Release Sorcery |
In the enchanting realm of Liurnia, nestled amidst its serene Lakes, lie three formidable Crystalians awaiting brave adventurers. Two epic battles await those who dare to challenge these majestic beings. The first encounter awaits in the depths of Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel, a mystical cavern situated just northwest of the awe-inspiring Church of Vows. This initial face-off features a lone Crystalian wielding a fearsome Ringblade accompanied by a collection of diminutive Chakrams. This enthralling bout serves as a captivating introduction to the mechanics and strategies required to triumph over subsequent encounters with Crystalians.
Glintstone Dragon Smarag
The subsequent encounter takes place within the depths of the Academy Crystal Cave, demanding a greater level of skill as you square off against a duo of Crystalians. To locate this secluded cavern, simply remain near the water's edge and follow the outermost western boundary of the prestigious Raya Lucaria Academy. As you venture inside, brace yourself to confront a Spear Crystalian and a Staff Crystalian, both of whom expertly wield their respective weapons, employing moves befitting their specialized combat styles. Thankfully, this formidable challenge can be overcome with the right strategy and determination.
Name | Location Found | Rewards Dropped |
---|---|---|
Glintstone Dragon Smarag | West of Raya Lucaria Academy | 14,000 Runes, 1x Dragon Heart (unlocks Smarag's Glintstone Breath) |
The Glintstone Dragon Smarag is likely the second Dragon Boss encounter for players, following the first encounter with the Flying Dragon Agheel in Limgrave. Unlike Agheel, Smarag is a colossal Dragon that has consumed numerous skilled sorcerers, resulting in his body being transformed by their Glintstone sorceries, giving him magical abilities.
Smarag can be found sleeping to the west of Raya Lucaria Academy, guarding a small landmass where three corpses lie. One of these corpses holds the Academy Glintstone Key, which is required for entry into the Academy. However, players have the option to make a risky dash to grab the key without defeating Smarag.
For players not using Bleed weapons, defeating Smarag can be challenging. The main concern is his Glintstone Fire-Breathing attacks, as they pose the most significant threat.
Red Wolf Of Radagon
Name | Location Found | Rewards Dropped |
---|---|---|
Red Wolf of Radagon | Debate Parlor of Raya Lucaria Academy | 14,000 Runes and 1x Memory Stone |
In the past, the Red Wolf of Radagon remained fiercely loyal to its master, demonstrating unwavering protection. Even after the master's demise, the Red Wolf persists in fulfilling its duty as the guardian of Radagon (and another individual in a technical sense), effectively safeguarding the esteemed Debate Parlor of the Raya Lucaria Academy. Although not imperative to defeat Rennala for reaching an ending, challenging this boss becomes essential for players aiming to successfully clear the Academy.
Of course, avid fans of From Software games will immediately recognize the similarities between this canine character and Sif, the companion of Artorias from the original Dark Souls. However, it is important to acknowledge that this dog has magical abilities, distinguishing it from the purely melee-focused Sif. Therefore, players will need to adjust their strategies accordingly. Additionally, it is crucial to note that encountering enemies similar to the Red Wolf of Radagon will not be a singular occurrence for the Tarnished; thus, adequate preparation is essential.
Rennala, Queen Of The Full Moon
Name | Location Found | Rewards Dropped |
---|---|---|
Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon | Grand Library at the peak of Raya Lucaria Academy | 40,000 Runes, the Remembrance of the Full Moon Queen, and the Great Rune of the Unborn |
The Red Wolf of Radagon has been defeated, leaving Rennala, the Queen of the Full Moon, as the last remaining boss at Raya Lucaria Academy. As a Shardbearer and the mother of the beloved NPC Lunar Princess Ranni, Rennala holds significant lore significance. Interestingly, defeating Rennala will not result in Ranni's questline ending prematurely, as Ranni will continue to defend her mother by summoning a copy of her during phase 2 of the boss fight.
Once players overcome both the puzzle phase and combat phase of the encounter with Rennala, located at the top of Raya Lucaria Academy beyond the Courtyard in the Grand Library, she will transform into an NPC merchant. This transformation grants players the ability to respec using Lunar Tears and provides access to a particular chest associated with Ranni's questline.
Omenkiller Of The Albinauric Village
Name | Location Found | Rewards Dropped |
---|---|---|
Omenkiller | Village of the Albinaurics | 4,900 Runes and the Crucible Knot Talisman |
The Omenkiller can be regarded as an exemplary case wherein a standard enemy has been transformed into a standalone boss fight, perhaps without deserving such distinction. As players progress further, they will come across numerous adversaries of this kind, who essentially pose as elite foes demanding caution.
Spirit-Caller Snail Of The Road's End Catacombs
However, the initial adversary that the Tarnished is likely to encounter is a formidable foe known as the Omenkiller. This fearsome creature occupies a post in the Village of the Albinaurics, just beyond a modest rope bridge close to the hiding place of the non-playable character Albus, who resides within a pot. Vigilance is crucial, as the Omenkiller commands three hounds that it regularly dispatches to scour the area for any remaining Albinaurics. Thus, it is imperative to prioritize the elimination of these canines before engaging the Omenkiller itself.
Name | Location Found | Rewards Dropped |
---|---|---|
Spirit-Caller Snail | Road's End Catacombs | 3,000 Runes and Glintstone Sorcerer Spirit Ashes |
The Spirit-Caller Snail serves as the boss of Road's End Catacombs, which can be found just west of the Converted Tower. This particular catacomb is relatively easier to navigate, featuring a straightforward layout with minimal adversaries, apart from a few Fanged Imps and numerous hidden doors. As players thoroughly explore the area, they will eventually stumble upon a concealed path leading to the Spirit-Caller Snail. Here, they will face a sudden encounter with a spectral Crucible Knight.
Rather than becoming overly concerned with this Knight, it is advisable to search the room for a subtle luminosity. This glow serves as a definitive indicator of the Snail's presence. Striking the glowing area will inflict considerable damage on the Snail, causing it to teleport away to safety. Meanwhile, players should focus on evading or distracting the Crucible Knight and subsequently search for the glow once again. This process should be repeated until the Snail is ultimately defeated.
Royal Grave Evergaol & Sealed Tunnel Onyx Lords
Name | Location Found | Rewards Dropped |
---|---|---|
Onyx Lord | Royal Grave Evergaol | 3,600 Runes and Meteorite Sorcery |
Onyx Lord | Sealed Tunnel | 1,6000 Runes and Onyx Lord's Greatsword |
In Elden Ring, the mythical Alabaster Lords are enigmatic stone beings believed to have arrived in the Lands Between following an ancient meteor impact. Proficient in Gravity Magic, they are scattered across the realm. However, in the region of Liurnia of the Lakes, two powerful Alabaster Lords have taken on the name 'Onyx Lords' (originally, one of them was an Alabaster Lord, but the title was later changed after the game's release). The first Onyx Lord can be encountered in the Royal Grave Evergaol, situated east of Caria Manor. The second one lurks in the depths of the Sealed Tunnel located behind Caria Manor. While these two Onyx Lords share similarities with their regular counterparts found sporadically throughout the game, challenging an inexperienced player may still pose a formidable struggle.
Bols, Carian Knight
Name | Location Found | Rewards Dropped |
---|---|---|
Bols, Carian Knight | Cuckoo's Evergaol | 4,600 Runes and Greatblade Phalanx Sorcery |
In the Lands Between, Trolls face a harsh and unfair treatment due to their ancestors' betrayal of the Giants during the War for the Erdtree. They aligned themselves with Marika and the 'Greater Will', gaining entry into the Kingdom, but this acceptance was built on deceit. Trolls continue to suffer from significant mistreatment by humans. However, the Carian Family stands out as the exception, treating Trolls with respect and even equipping them with armor and enchanted blades capable of using Sorceries.
So, the fact that Bols, a Carian Knight, is imprisoned within the Cuckoo's Evergaol, implies a surprising act of betrayal. In any case, the Cuckoo's Evergaol is located north of the Revenger’s Shack, and the battle with Bols is hardly noteworthy as he fights similarly to other Trolls in the game, except for his occasional use of the Greatblade Phalanx Sorcery.
Adan, Thief Of Fire
Name | Location Found | Rewards Dropped |
---|---|---|
Adan, Thief of Fire | Malefactor's Evergaol | 3,800 Runes and Flame of the Fell God Incantation |
Yet another Evergaol fight, Adan possesses an intriguing quality - he stands apart from being repurposed as another boss or basic enemy like the Black Knife Assassins or Troll Carian Knights. Adan, known as the Thief of Fire, was incarcerated within the Malefactor's Evergaol, nestled in the lofty plateaus of south Liunia. His crime involved purloining the sacred secrets of the Fire Giant and the deity they revered, lending him the title Thief of Fire. Notably, Adan holds lore significance, as he serves as the catalyst for the presence of Fire Prelates throughout this region of Liurnia. These Prelates embarked upon a journey from the Giants' Mountaintop to seek retribution upon Adan for his transgressions. In terms of bosses, Adan's tactics are relatively straightforward - he wields his flail in various manners or invokes the power of the Legendary Incantation, Flame of the Fell God.
Bloodhound Knight
Name | Location Found | Rewards Dropped |
---|---|---|
Bloodhound Night | Lakeside Crystal Cave | 3,600 Runes and Cerulean Amber Medallion Talisman |
The Bloodhound Knight, a formidable guardian, awaits players as a boss within Lakeside Crystal Cave, situated west of the Malefactor's Evergaol. Regrettably, it appears to be a mere repetition of the previous encounter with Bloodhound Knight Darriwil in the Forlorn Hound Evergaol. This boss fulfills the duty of protecting the path leading to the Slumbering Wolf’s Shack, where Latenna seeks respite alongside her faithful companion, Lobo. Intriguingly, the lore surrounding the Bloodhound Knight items suggests that this particular knight has chosen Latenna as its master, faithfully watching over her. Sadly, overcoming this Knight is indispensable for the Tarnished to successfully conclude her questline.
Royal Knight Loretta
Name | Location Found | Rewards Dropped |
---|---|---|
Royal Knight Loretta | Caria Manor | 10,000 Runes, Loretta's Greatbow Sorcery, and Loretta's Slash Ash of War |
Royal Knight Loretta, or the 'spirit' incarnation of her, serves as the final boss in Caria Manor. Once an unwavering Carian Knight, Loretta's spirit remains stationed at the sole entranceway into the Three Sisters region to safeguard Ranni from potential harm. The Tarnished will encounter Loretta on multiple occasions, with the subsequent encounter being a genuine battle against her which will prove more challenging. However, for now, players need only concern themselves with evading her formidable Greatbow Sorceries, rendering the fight relatively effortless.
Glintstone Dragon Adula
Name | Location Found | Rewards Dropped |
---|---|---|
Glintsone Dragon Adula | Ranni's Rise and Moonlight Altar | 120,000 Runes, Adula's Moonblade Sorcery, and 3x Dragon Hearts |
Content must be written in English.
The Glintstone Dragon Adula presents a unique challenge as a boss that is intentionally designed to be unbeatable in its initial encounter, requiring players to face it again in a different location. The first confrontation with Adula occurs immediately after defeating the ghost of Royal Knight Loretta at Caria Manor. Adula can be found roaming the Three Sisters area, typically in front of Ranni's Rise. However, once the Tarnished manages to deplete Adula's health to approximately 50 percent, the dragon will flee, concluding the battle temporarily.
Subsequently, players will not encounter Adula again until a much later stage at the Moonlight Altar, located outside the Cathedral of Manus Celes. During this second encounter, Adula can be defeated, although it is a regrettable outcome. It is unfortunate that the Tarnished must kill Adula, especially considering the lore surrounding it, as described in the Moonblade of Adula. According to the lore, Ranni triumphed over Adula, resulting in the dragon pledging its loyalty to her. Therefore, in theory, Adula should be allied with the Tarnished, or at least not hostile, if the Tarnished is present at the Moonlight Altar.
Alecto, Black Knife Ringleader
Name | Location Found | Rewards Dropped |
---|---|---|
Alecto, Black Knife Ringleader | Ringleader's Evergaol | 80,000 Runes and Black Knife Tiche Spirit Ashes |
Alecto, the Black Knife Ringleader, earned her name and title by orchestrating the Night of Black Knives. During this fateful event, Alecto and her fellow assassins stole the fragment of Destined Death from Maliketh and infused it into their daggers, which they then used to bring about the demise of Godwyn the Golden. Tragically, both Alecto's daughter and another assassin named Tiche lost their lives during the escape from the scene. Alecto, however, managed to evade capture temporarily, only to eventually be apprehended and imprisoned within the Ringleader's Evergaol at the Moonlight Altar.
Of course, this confrontation is exclusively encountered towards the concluding phase of Ranni the Witch’s questline, as access to the Moonlight Altar locale is only granted after players triumph over both Astel and Ranni's Baleful Shadow adversaries. It is important for players to exercise caution, for despite Alecto's resemblance to the other Black Knife Assassins, she poses a considerably greater challenge and possesses an extensive repertoire of maneuvers.
Royal Revenant
Name | Location Found | Rewards Dropped |
---|---|---|
Royal Revenant | Basement of Kingsrealm Ruins | 3,100 Runes |
The enemies known as Revenants in Elden Ring are among the most challenging and frustrating. They possess remarkable speed, aggression, and leave the Tarnished little opportunity to gather their thoughts or recover. The Royal Revenant, a formidable boss located in a concealed basement area of the Kingsrealm Ruins, presents an even more exasperating encounter.
To begin, players must navigate to the Kingsrealm Ruins, which are situated on the route leading to Caria Manor in the eastern region of Liurnia. Once they arrive, they must locate and access the basement area. Finally, after successfully defeating the Revenant, either through conventional methods or by utilizing the healing spell strategy, they are rewarded with a mere 3,100 Runes. Fortunately, the door previously guarded by the boss also holds the coveted Frozen Needle Rapier, which can be considered a valuable drop from the encounter.
Magma Wyrm Makar
Name | Location Found | Rewards Dropped |
---|---|---|
Magama Wyrm Makar | Ruin-Strewn Precipice | 24,000 Runes, Magma Wyrm's Scalesword, and 1x Dragon Heart |
Finally, we have the formidable Magma Wyrm Makar, serving as the boss of the Ruin-Strewn Precipice. Players can choose this alternate route to the Atlus Plateau if they wish to deviate from the usual path. Although Magma Wyrms can be encountered as regular enemies in Elden Ring, Makar will likely be the first one the Tarnished encounters, making it an excellent introduction to these creatures. Engaging in battle with Makar the Magma Wyrm can prove to be quite challenging due to its powerful attacks for the given area and its frequent use of area-of-effect moves. Interestingly, certain item descriptions found within the game suggest that Magma Wyrms were originally humans who became excessively involved in Dragon Communion. The fact that this particular creature has a name further supports this theory.
Elden Ring is available now for PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, and Xbox One and Series X|S.
