Highlights
Season of the Malignant in Diablo 4 fell short of players' expectations, with limited changes to gameplay and loot, leading some to stick to the Eternal Realm.
Season 1 of Diablo 4 features the coveted Caged Heart of the Barber, which allows players to effectively store and unleash the damage inflicted during critical strikes. It is an exceptionally popular item among players, as it can be utilized by any character and build. However, future expansions and seasons would benefit from diversifying the hype generated, rather than relying solely on a single item.
Players eagerly awaited Diablo 4's first season for the promised new content, stories, and loot that would keep them engaged. Unfortunately, Season of the Malignant did not live up to expectations, offering limited changes to the gameplay loop. Some players opted to stick with the Eternal Realm instead. However, this doesn't mean that all aspects of the first season were bad; they simply fell short. Blizzard can learn from player feedback, especially considering that the one thing players are most excited about is primarily one item.
To win back players, Diablo 4's loot should be a significant factor in every update. Season of the Malignant did introduce multiple Unique items and seasonal Aspects, which can enhance certain builds and create more allure. However, some of the game's best Uniques remain elusive, with players reaching level 100 without obtaining them. On a more positive note, there is one item that fans can anticipate in Season 1 - the Caged Heart of the Barber. It will likely be attainable for all players engaging with the seasonal content.
Why Diablo 4's Heart of the Barber Carries Season 1
Malignant Hearts in Diablo 4 operate similarly to the game's Gems, as they can be placed in specific slots based on the type of Heart. However, unlike Gems, Malignant Hearts cannot be removed from the socket, only replaced. Acquiring Malignant Hearts is not overly challenging, and the Caged Heart of the Barber is widely regarded as the top choice.
The Caged Heart of the Barber is categorized as a Wrathful Heart and enables players to accumulate the damage they inflict and then unleash it. This effect is triggered exclusively on critical strikes, causing the target to accumulate all received damage for a duration of 2 to 4 seconds. Afterwards, the stored damage is released within an area surrounding the target. With Diablo 4's increased enemy density in Dungeons, this remarkable tool proves invaluable for any build, greatly enhancing add-clearing capabilities, and providing versatility in various situations.
For slower builds that require a significant buildup to unleash devastating damage, like the Diablo 4 Hammer of the Ancients Barbarian build, it is recommended to equip a Caged Heart of the Barber with a roll of at least three seconds out of four. This maximizes the damage output when the AoE explosions are triggered. On the other hand, for faster builds that rely on spamming abilities, it may be more beneficial to have a shorter time window to maintain high damage output while minimizing the risk to survivability.
Not only is this item incredibly powerful, but it is also versatile and can be utilized by any character and build in the game, sometimes even enabling new playstyles. It has quickly become a favorite among Diablo 4 players, showcasing Blizzard's potential for introducing new items and loot to both the base game and Season 2 in October. However, it is important to remember that a single item should not overshadow the excitement for future Diablo 4 expansions and seasons. The seasonal model still has plenty of room for growth and development.
Diablo 4 is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
