Despite his popularity, Ghost Rider, also known as Johnny Blaze, has not made his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) since Nicolas Cage portrayed him in the mid-2000s movies. Although Marvel Studios now holds the rights to the character, there have been no official statements or hints about the possibility of a Ghost Rider movie. Why Hasn't The MCU Cast Its Own Ghost Rider Yet?
: A Proof of Concept for a Solo Ghost Rider Adventure in the MCUStryder HD has recently released a captivating Ghost Rider fan trailer that aims to demonstrate the potential for a standalone movie centered around the Spirit of Vengeance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This captivating footage explores the character of Robbie Reyes, portrayed by Gabriel Luna, known for his appearance in Agents of SHIELD. Additionally, the trailer introduces the idea of Keanu Reeves playing the iconic character of Johnny Blaze, with his narrative being unraveled through his successor.
Ghost Rider, despite the introduction of numerous new heroes and villains in the MCU during Phases 4 and 5, has yet to be hinted at or made an appearance. Nonetheless, the MCU has commenced establishing the groundwork for a potential Midnight Sons project by introducing supernatural characters such as Werewolf by Night and the upcoming Blade reboot. This presents an opportune moment to finally bring Ghost Rider into action, whether it be by continuing with Robbie or utilizing Johnny.
Agents of SHIELD set the foundation for both Robbie and Johnny, with Johnny making a brief appearance in season 4. We learned that Johnny was the one who transferred the power of the Spirit of Vengeance to Robbie. It's a missed opportunity that Johnny hasn't been further explored in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and hasn't been utilized to revive Agents of SHIELD's Ghost Rider storyline. It would be incredible if the MCU could find a way to showcase both Johnny and Robbie as Ghost Riders simultaneously.
There were plans for a Ghost Rider TV show on Hulu, but it never materialized due to creative differences. However, now that Marvel Studios is incorporating Marvel TV characters again, such as Daredevil receiving their own Disney+ show, there's no reason why they can't consider a similar opportunity for Ghost Rider. Hopefully, whether in the near future or further down the line, Ghost Rider will eventually find a permanent place in the MCU.
