During the filming of John Wick: Chapter 4, Keanu Reeves was so impressed by Donnie Yen's martial arts skills that he requested some last-minute changes to their first fight scene. Director Chad Stahelski explains that the original plan for John's fight against Caine in the Osaka Continental was altered after Reeves witnessed Yen's fighting ability firsthand. The fourth installment of the action-packed franchise sees Reeves reprise his role as the iconic hitman, this time taking on a new adversary portrayed by Bill Skarsgård. The film also features several new cast members, including Yen as Caine, a blind assassin assigned with the task of eliminating Wick.
Working with Donnie was one of the highlights of my career as a choreographer. Collaborating with him to create moves and sequences was a thrilling experience, and I was able to switch into my stunt mode while physically working alongside him. The speed and agility he possesses is nothing short of incredible and almost unbelievable. We had to adjust the choreography because Keanu himself pointed out that John Wick wouldn't be able to keep up with Donnie's skills. Hence, we made changes in the museum room sequence.
Donnie Yen Was The Perfect Addition To John Wick 4
Keanu Reeves had a suggestion to make Donnie Yen's character in the movie John Wick nervous. He felt that Donnie's character was so quick that they needed to showcase that he was a formidable opponent. Instead of bringing Donnie down, they wanted to elevate his character as much as possible. Keanu then came up with the idea of making the scene a game of hide and seek, which the team thought was a stroke of genius.
The John Wick franchise has always introduced a diverse range of captivating supporting characters, but the latest installment takes it up a notch. Yen, renowned for his exceptional work in the Ip Man franchise, is indisputably one of the most skilled martial artists in the action cinema industry today. Simply by looking at Yen's impressive credentials, it's evident that his new character is going to be a force to be reckoned with, even before Caine makes his on-screen appearance.
The character development in John Wick: Chapter 4 goes beyond simply portraying Caine as a one-dimensional villain. Instead, the movie delves into his backstory and shows how he is forced out of retirement to protect his daughter, making his mission more complicated and nuanced. Moreover, the revelation that Caine and Wick were once friends adds an additional layer of complexity to his character. The fact that Caine is blind also showcases his exceptional abilities as an assassin, with Yen's character able to match or even surpass John's skill level despite his disability. This unique characteristic also adds an exciting new dimension to the fight scenes, such as the inventive kitchen fight where Caine uses sound cues to locate his targets. Furthermore, the fact that Reeves' character initially fears Caine during their first encounter makes their eventual team-up in the stair fight even more satisfying to witness.
