Highlights
Cross-gen evolutions in Pokemon games allow underused critters to shine & take powerful ones to new heights, like Kingambit in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet.
In future games, cross-gen evolutions could greatly enhance the potential of certain Gen 3 Pokemon such as Mightyena, Delcatty, Volbeat, and Illumise. Similarly, in Gen 10, cross-gen evolutions could greatly improve the appearance and overall abilities of Pokemon like Wailord, Claydol, and Tropius.
Pokemon games in the mainline series are known for incorporating and introducing new mechanics and concepts with each generation. While regional forms in Generation 7 quickly became a beloved feature, cross-gen evolutions have always been a fan-favorite. These evolutions allow lesser-known Pokemon to shine and can even enhance the power of already strong ones.
A prime example of this is Kingambit in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, which is an evolution of Bisharp. Despite not necessarily needing an evolution, it is thematically fitting and adds an exciting twist to the Pokemon. Just like several other regions in the series, Hoenn's Pokemon could greatly benefit from new evolutions in future games. Generation 10 seems like the most plausible starting point for these additions. While not all Generation 3 creatures require or are able to have evolutions, there are certainly some that would greatly benefit from this new opportunity.
Mightyena
Initially thought to be what Bloodmoon Ursaluna in The Teal Mask DLC for Gen 9 games really was, Mightyena is one of those pocket monsters that would make many fans elated if it were to receive a new evolution. While Mightyena doesn't necessarily give the impression of lacking a crucial element to unlock its full potential, the addition of numerous overpowering Pokemon in modern games justifies the idea of taking it to the next level.
Delcatty
Despite receiving a boost in recent games, Delcatty still holds the title for having one of the lowest base stat totals (BST) among all evolved creatures across every generation. Although it remains undeniably adorable, there are valid reasons to argue for the inclusion of a Delcatty evolution in Pokemon Gen 10. Whether it's the Normal typing or its diverse move pool, a cross-generational evolution could breathe new life into Delcatty's existence.
Volbeat and Illumise
Recently added to Gen 9 via Pokémon Scarlet and Violet's The Teal Mask, both Volbeat and Illumise are creatures that have proven to be quite underwhelming. Their type combination does not work in their favor, and their lackluster movesets further contribute to their disappointment. With Volbeat's signature move, Tail Glow, now being available for other Pokémon, and Illumise never having a unique move to begin with, these two Pokémon are in desperate need of a solution. One possible solution could be a cross-gen evolution, allowing them to finally shine and achieve the recognition they deserve.
Wailord
Wailord, the colossal Pokemon, is often misrepresented in games, failing to capture its true massive size. Fortunately, players were ecstatic in Gen 8's Isle of Armor DLC when finally presented with a more accurate portrayal. Given Wailord's immense size and formidable battling capabilities, envisioning its evolution in Gen 10 would be utterly awe-inspiring. Game Freak could explore various paths for this remarkable creature, not limited to merely amplifying its size even further.
Claydol
Claydol could have been extremely powerful in The Teal Mask if it was included in Gen 9. Being the only Ground/Psychic Pokémon in the entire franchise, it would be amazing to see it receive more attention in future games. With Claydol and Baltoy's Pokedex entries describing how they were brought to life by a mysterious light hitting these clay dolls, a cross-generational evolution has immense potential in terms of appearance design and overall abilities.
Tropius
Tropius, a captivating Gen 3 creation, showcases a remarkable design reminiscent of a dinosaur. Its type fusion greatly influences its aesthetic, so much so that it even masters the art of flight. Despite these intriguing qualities, Tropius has struggled to make a mark in both competitive and casual gameplay, fading into obscurity within the Pokémon franchise. A potential cross-generational evolution in future Pokémon games could be the opportunity for this forgotten gem to truly shine.
